Why? Joe Louis and his 'bum of the month club' is probably the early usage we are most familiar with, though of course if you go back - especially to the depression era there were many, many fighters literally fighting for the price of their dinner and possibly a cheap bed for the night and likely the term goes back further than even that.

I know it's just used as a kinda shorthand these days but to me it's still unnecessary and kinda disrespectful - specially the way its used on here.. Literally only in the weird world of boxing fandom could top 10 fighters, even sometimes world champions be described as 'bums'.
