Duran and Pac became bigger stars than GGG because they got the nod in their big step up fight(s) generally...GGG was 0-2 in getting a nod vs Canelo...just is what it is.

He was a fringe star before Canelo...Canelo made him into a star...but he wasn't able to become a superstar...he needed to get an official win or 2 there vs Canelo and it didn't pan out for him, though I felt he deserved both.

Ward won a GOLD medal at the Olympics

were the Olympics in Oakland... ???

    aight then... STFU !

    * Ward won a gold medal
    * Ward unified with HOF champions
    * Ward moved up in weight
    * Ward did what he needed to do to make big fights
    * Ward did not lie to his fans

none of that applies to Golovkin

          Headbutts Video:

Ward did sh.it like that all the time man lol..look at his fight vs Bika...I've never seen a dude get away with so much lol, and it was still a really close fight...Idk I've watched most of his fights and I just don't really get the fawning...I really feel like many who tout Ward's skills didn't really watch a ton of him.

Look at 3:52 in that 2nd video...a normal dude should get DQd for that move all day. Holding a guy and deliberately throwing an elbow lol...it's a joke man.
So a headbutt in round 8 and one in round 10? That's it, that's all you got?

Why was he losing the fight before that up to round 7 then?

Here's how Dan Rafael saw it:

"Against Kessler, Ward displayed confidence, speed and a tremendous jab, which he worked to the head and body very nicely. Kessler was flat and just never seemed to get into any rhythm or land anything remotely damaging. Ward, who did an excellent job dominating on the inside and the outside, hurt Kessler late in the fourth round and bruised him under the right eye. He opened a bad cut over Kessler's left eye in the eighth round. An accidental head butt opened a cut over Kessler's right eye in the 10th round, which is what caused referee Jack Reiss to stop the bout at 1 minute, 42 seconds of the 11th round and send it to the scorecards for a technical decision. Although Kessler complained about the head butts and refereeing, the fact is that Ward simply kicked his butt. Frankly, Ward should be upset that the fight was stopped for the technical decision because he looked like he was on his way to scoring a knockout, which would have given him an extra point under the tournament rules."[1] ESPN's Dan Rafael

I think Ward's personal story - parents died/were drug addicts, and he was taken in by famed trainer Virgil Hill - probably charmed a lot of people in the amateur circuit...and I would assume he employed the same dirty tactics in those fights.

He is a tough guy to dominate when he gets dirty...so if you are the star in the ams, and you muck up a lot of your rounds, you probably win all of those fights by default.

Would love to see some footage of him in the ams though.

Addressed that in another post...never really seen film of him in the ams...but it is a bit of a popularity contest and corrupt...we know that.

Haven't seen the fight in ages but figured I have some time now so why not? As you said, people act as if Ward wasn't boxing beautifully in that fight. Kessler got cut in the 4th round under his right eye and couldn't land a right hand to save his life and Ward was jabbing and hookin. The fight was even fought in a smaller ring instead of the standard 20X20

Man I'm sure a Danish reporter out there had a different view of that fight lol...and the ref of the fight said there were 5 accidental headbutts in Ward-Kessler...not sure where you got only 2 from...the one in round 10 is obvious btw...and after all the previous headbutts, an egregious one like that should have given the ref some pause and at least docked a point for that one.

And the truth is...I like some good dirty fighting...I really do...the line between fair and foul is slim and sometimes that means you have to be skilled in the dark arts.

But Ward reminds me of a rich kid whose dad sets up tournaments for him...and he brings in other fighters...and his son gets to cheat and do whatever he wants in the ring...and even then they are close fights lol...and then the judges' cards say 10-2 11-1 and 12-0...idk man I just don't see how people don't evaluate Ward's obvious help in his career when analyzing his resume/standing etc.

Golovkin " helped " his career... by refusing to fight the same caliber of opponent that guys like Ward/Canelo were willing to fight

Canelo had the balls to fight Lara, against the wishes of his promoter... Ward had the balls to rematch Kovalev, against the wishes of his promoter... Golovkin never had the balls to do anything like that... he avoided Lara, and Jacobs/Derevy will never get their rematch

I’ve been watching a ton of older fights because I’m a relatively new boxing fan, and I have to say Ward is one of the least enjoyable fighters to watch. That and retiring at 32 after speed-bagging Kovalevs nuts didn’t leave me much of a fan of him.
