I know what your initial reaction will be, but please keep Pacquiao vs Margarito and Cotto, and Duran vs Hagler, in the back of your mind for some imperfect but decent examples, and hear me out.
Im a big Loma fan, and I used to be one of the most vocal saying he shouldnt go above 135 or 140 max. But that was before I learned some some additional information, much more important and on a completely separate level and category to what I knew before, about professional "boxing." Canelo vs Kovalev, among other things, showed me what is possible in this game. Now, I think the Loma show would be even more interesting at 147, and I think he's just as likely to clean out 147 as anyone else in the game, it just depends how things go down. But his defense appears so good, it could work. When Spence does appear to hit him, he would just have to appear to eat those shots and push through, or maybe get off the canvas once or twice in the fight, recover during the 10 sec count, then go back to "winning" the "fight." A heavy clubbing "shot" from someone like Spence could appear put Loma down for 2-3 seconds, but it could appear to take a perfect clean hit to appear to put Loma out, and most the fast guys at 126-135 appeared unable to land one on Loma (besides Linares), so why would it need to appear different with Spence. And at 147, with his handspeed and explosiveness, it would be similar to Pacquiao, his speed could appear to surprise guys and knock them down, his body work might even appear powerful enough to stop guys like Spence, Crawford, Thurman, old Pacquiao, etc, as they fatigue.
Speed correlates very well with power. Loma might be small but he's no Tim Bradley where no matter how much muscle he puts on, he just doesn't display heavy hands at all. The more muscle Loma puts on, it has always translated to displaying more power. When he went from 126 to 130, his display of power improved. When he went from 130 to 135, his display of power improved and he started scoring "knockdowns" every fight. Now in his recent video footage, he looks like he's hitting with more force than most 140 pounders display. Spence might take most his best "head shots" early in the fight, but the "body shots" from someone that fast and explosive and accurate could look immensely powerful and Spence could "react" as such.
I want to see it. Loma vs Teofimo at 135, then Loma vs everyone at 147. His first year at 135, he was too small, but he looks built up now as he nears 35 years old. He's carrying the weight better. You can see in his recent training videos, he looks like a mini-Canelo, his upper body is more built and so are his legs. He and Usyk have definitely used the time up to bulk up.
