Comments Thread For: Boxing Without Boxing: The Great White Hype

It's funny because so often it feels true. That's not the same as being true. There are enough occasions over 90 minutes where the line is close enough. In 1996, director Reginald Hudlin (House Party, Boomerang) tackled the sweet science in a way that few others have ever approached the sport on the silver screen. Boxing has easily lent itself to Alger-esque fairy tales (Rocky), morality plays (Requiem for a Heavyweight), tragedies (Million Dollar Baby), and yes even comedies (Diggstown).

Bob Arum did a little Don King on the public when he had everyone believing that Chris Algieri was a formidable opponent for Pacquiao!

Mayweather stole a page from the same book (with help from Skip Bayless) when he fought McGregor! He knew that fight would sell HUGE because "it is what it is." They sold 4.3M PPVs!

I've not watched that movie in a long time. I'm probably gonna watch it again now real soon because it's hilarious.

from a boxing standpoint algieri was as credible an opponent as Brandon Rios or Jesse vargas or Adrien broner were going into the fight. He was an undefeated world champion who had just defeated an opponent who gave pac rival Bradley hell. From a great white hype standpoint, it's not like algieri brought in some large fan base. He wasn't known by many outside of NY and the fight took place in China. So him being white didn't benefit boxing business all that much. Now McGregor, that's another story.

I remember seeing that in the cinema. Funny movie and very indicative of boxing at that time. The idea of a white heavyweight that was actually good was a novel idea. Fast forward to 2020 and it’s the norm. Not because heavyweights in general are so much better these days, quite the opposite, it’s because heavyweights these days are inferior to those of earlier eras.
Thank both the NFL and the NBA for taking the best big man athletes from boxing. Why go into boxing when one can get a guaranteed college degree and immediately sign contracts worth millions, have a defined season, and make millions more in advertising?
Boxing will never again get the best of the big men from the USA. The heavyweight division will be the domain of european big men....who have no other big money sport.

Oh, geez. The world, every corner of it, is racist. Always has been, always will be. People make fun of and deride other people who don't look, speak and act like them. Is this news?

He barely beat Provodnikov. If he beat him twice, then maybe a fight would be warranted. However, I really was talking about how he promoted the fight, and the things he said!

"I like the storyline with Algieri," Arum said. "Besides being a good fighter, he's a college graduate, a kid who wants to go to medical school to become a doctor in the future. He's articulate, good looking and we'll get a lot of backing in the promotion from the New York media because he's from New York."

Manny Pacquiao's next fight probably will be a welterweight title defense against Chris Algieri, an unknown fighter just a few weeks ago until he upset Ruslan Provodnikov to win a junior welterweight world title.

That's not the typical way you "hype" a fighter.

so promoting algieri as someone who's intelligent is exclusive to white boxers? Yeah, you may want to reflect on that comment. As far as beating provodnikov, yes it was a close fight... That he won. Brandon Rios came off a loss when he faced pac. Jesse vargas beat sadam Ali. Broner had a draw with Jesse vargas. There are multiple examples of race playing a role in boxing and promotors using race to their financial benefit. Pac vs algieri isn't a good example of one though. though.
