He did had moments against Leonard when he used the jab, but even then he gave him the same look over and over and lost the fight.
two of the greatest welterweights of all time and here you are Cus D’mato trying to say how this fight could have been different , do you realise what an idiot you have made yourself out to be with that statement lol.
You might as well add If Frazier hit Ali with more left hooks he could have kept him down for the full count.

Floyd was great. I wouldn’t debate it. But everything you said is true. There are degrees. Leonard was simply greater. I can’t even see Mayweather beating Hearns, which Ray did. Watching Tommy fight again yesterday only reminded me what a beautiful fighter he was. Almost a perfect boxing specimen.

Hearns was a stellar boxer and murderous puncher. The fact Leonard fought him as well as he did speaks volumes. I tend to agree that Ray was arguably just below Robinson, but Tommy was only twenty-two in their first meeting (Leonard was twenty-five), and was apparently weight-drained. A prime, solid Hearns might’ve very well beaten Ray in that first encounter.
which round was Leonard visibly hurt by hearns to the point he wobbled or legs betrayed him ?
I’ve seen that fight over 50 times and it my favourite fight of all time...start watching it and tell me the round which he hurt Leonard firstly.
2nd hearns came in against estrada at 145 and Cuevas he was 146 and also boxed 2 more times at 145
He was hurt by Leonard 6, 7 and could have been stopped then if the bell never saved him in the 7th.
The weight argument is mute because he never lost before when he came in lower than 147 limit

to add I for one don’t believe Robinson was any better than Leonard and these 2 can arguably take the number 1 spot in history

Absolutely, Floyd would have retired 3 times just to avoid the Hitman alone.

Sugar Ray Leonard by clear UD, 117-111. Floyd lost to castillo, arguably lost to Maidana too and past prime de le hoya almost beat him.he's not giving leonard too many problems

What makes Benítez one of the top two welters ever

                I thought that’s Robinson & Leonard

of the greatest which means Benitez is one of them and certainly makes the lower top 10...I would class Robinson,Leonard and hearns taking up the space amongst the top 5

Yesterday was possibly the first time since the fight actually happened that I watched Leonard-Hearns I. I’m not going back to it any time soon. Too many fights out there to watch. I don’t remember the round. It was before the fifth, I believe. When I say “hurt,” I don’t mean Leonard was terribly rocked or something to that effect. But Ray was visibly hurt. He took a good shot from one of the biggest ****ers in welterweight history, and it showed. Leonard of course took it well.

Your points are well taken, but I maintain that the weight issue affected Hearns in the championship rounds, as Gil Clancy also pointed out. Tommy was crushing everyone else in much earlier rounds. It came back to bite him versus a prime Leonard. Hearns was a beanpole at 147. Going a couple of pounds under would definitely have an adverse effect against a legendary opponent.

You have Benitez that high? Can’t say I agree. This division is stacked. As great as Wilfred was, I don’t think he cracks the top-ten.
