Comments Thread For: Arum Explains Why 'Monopolist' Dana White Would Not Survive in Boxing

A few days ago, UFC President Dana White made it clear that he was fully intending to go forward with his planned UFC 249 fight card, which is scheduled for April 18th. Other sporting events, including boxing, have canceled just about everything in the months of March, April and May - due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

You can't do that in boxing because of the Muhammad Ali Act, which to reasons only known to [White] doesn't apply to the UFC. Why? I don't know

      -----------------------------------

      He doesn't know why a boxing-specific law doesn't apply to a non-boxing sport?

      Is he wilfully obtuse?

One of the primary reasons that Congress introduced the law was that professional boxing is not governed by any league, association, or any form of an established organisation like the majority of other professional sports.

The same cannot be said for UFC, which is de facto like a governing organisation. You can argue that UFC is simply the leading promotor vs (say) Bellator, but this is analogous to what used to exist with the NBA vs the ABA (or not entirely different to the two major leagues in baseball which operated as separate en****** for decade and decades, but were still considered governing organisations).

Perhaps Bob could explain how every major league sport is not a monopoly?

You can say all want about Mr Arum but he is very correct this time. White is truly a monopolist who treats fighters like ******, maximum damage with minimal reward.

Yep. White has admitted he wanted to follow the WWE model. The last thing he wants is mma to be a world league like boxing. He’s made more money than any ufc fighter. MMA will get to be more like boxing eventually. Just takes time and precedents. Nobody in boxing is going to want to work with White. It’s an old boys club. They all hate each other but will work to freeze him out. How can he promote boxers at the wages they get and not bury the ufc fighters at the same time? Nobody expected him to actually hold boxing cards. All his ufc guys would try to get on them.

You cant really compare a team sport to a singular combat sport. If an NBA player feels he is mistreated or wants more money, he can leave to another team when his contract is up or can ask for a release, whereas the UFC has a monopoly and if you don't play ball with them then at most you can land at Bellator for far less money.

UFC is the equivalent of one big team.

It's called a union. Every major sport has one except boxing which has Ali Act.

                  UFC sucks for fighters

                    Bob Arum is a gentleman.

Again, I agree completely with Bob Arum. There is not debate on this one. 2-0.
