Agree 100% i was more referring to 2009-2011 time when they could have "unified"( prolly not even possible due to g only having a regular title ) but iam sure the plans they had which u listed were already well in motion then aswell . But even that wasnt plausible either because martinez was searching for ( and deservedly so ) for that big payday after the pavlik and William's wins . Before cotto was even a thought at middleweight. But as you stated the plan was JR then and for no good reason other than money but martinez was a dog and one of my favorites so I cant hate on him going for that payday there really werent many other options other than ggg at the time besides that and ggg hadnt hit his stride yet popularity wise and was very high risk , to risky to take before that JR fight .

Yeah.. besides in 2009 GGG was just starting to cause some waves in his adoptive home of Germany and was - at least in theory - closing in on Sturm for the WBA title. Globally he was irrelevent. And then all the shennanigans with Sturm (allegedly) bribing the WBA to elevate him out of harms way, GGG splitting from Universum and Universum slapping an injunction on him against fighting in the US that lasted through til May or so 2012.

Prime Martinez wasn’t an easy fight for anyone.

True, he was evasive, but I really don't see him avoiding GGG for all that time. And I don't think he could do damage to GGG.

I think the Martinez who beat pavlik could have beaten GGG . Not sure it would go that way but I would pick up albeit not to confidently . Ggg at his best was a monster just a shame he never fought anyone great until he showed signs of decline . That will forever taint his legacy and his chances in mythical matchups imo . Him and martinez really should have fought and it was very possible to make at a time and would have been one hell of a matchup

When I think about a mythical Martinez-Golovkin match-up, I refer back to Sergio's late scare vs. JCC Jr. Martinez completely dominated that fight for 11 rounds and Chavez Jr. was still able to get to him in the final round. Golovkin was waaaay better and I think he would have gotten to Martinez even sooner.

Ya ggg would have likely won then , problem was with that time is the wbc had their little Cotto canelo super fight and paid gggstepaside which he accepted but that is 110% the time that fight should have happened . The politics just didnt want it to be haha

Yeah he had just won an interim title I believe in 2009 . But by 2011 he could have def gone after martinez and pushed the fight, but hindsight is 2020 haha I wish it happened but it didnt they narrowly missed one another and it likely would have happened if Martinez could have got thru the Cotto canelo gauntlet which wasnt likely at that stage in his career . What a run that would have been for martinez haha I totally forgot about the universum fiasco making it so he couldnt fight over seas . What a shame that was . Like listed in another thread signing with them when he turned pro was a big mistake
