  • Comments Thread For: Boxing Without Boxing: Smokestack Lightning - Harry Greb, 1919

It starts with a simple question to a native of Pittsburgh: had they ever heard of Harry Greb? "No, no I've never heard of him. Was he better than Joe Louis? He wasn't better than Joe Louis." "Yeah, he was." There will always be a corner of the boxing world searching for Harry Greb. Searching for footage, facts, for anything more that can fill out what, on paper, might have been the greatest ring career of them all. For many if not most, the question of the greatest fighter, pound for pound, of all time has been set for more than half a century: Sugar Ray Robinson.

There are not many words that can describe Harry greb apart from legend. As a child at Christmas time I would always get a new boxing encyclopedia, the first thing I would do is look to see if there was any more info on Harry greb, as I had realized what a fighting machine this man must of been. That's why I have Mr greb as my avatar he's one of the all time greats in my book, and as alot of the old time fighters, had a tragic ending, sad really. Rip champ.

Interesting smokestack lightning came from him.

I have heard the expression and thought it was from a blues song but Greb was way before that.

Or was this just the title of the book and not associated with him?

Might be more legend than reality...but as was said in the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: print the legend.

I love greb because he didn't hide behind the color line. His record is littered with tough black fighters

                  good one !

                  I miss the MAAT series

not meaning for Greb, we know whats up with him

I know they don't get much clicks... but MAAT is a great read, and great to bookmark for reference material

probably an exhaustive amount of work for little reward

Good luck Cliff... I heard it said that in Pittsburgh there was a trunk perched over a ledge and in it were documents detailing how the Earth had been visited by aliens, with photos and all... unfortunately it was knocked over into the river when the person going to pick it up thought he had heard that another trunk had footage of some of Harry Greb's fights!
