Comments Thread For: Davison: Saunders Must Match Or Better Canelo's Boxing IQ

Ben Davison realizes there are a lot of traits that have helped Canelo Alvarez become one of the best boxers, pound-for-pound, in the world. Billy Joe Saunders' trainer feels one his best assets, the Mexican icon's intelligence in the ring, isn't discussed enough. That'll be one of the greatest challenges for Saunders to overcome when he defends his WBO super middleweight championship against Alvarez on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

      Lol.

What if he did and BJS decides to trade Kirkland style.

The odds are so wide because bjs can’t knock Canelo out and can’t, or almost certainly won’t get a decision no matter how slick he boxes.

Fight is likely to be a stinker based on styles. Saunders is a mover and Canelo has a low punch output. It'll look similar to Canelo vs Jacobs but even worse. Oh well, fight is getting postponed anyway.

I don’t understand what this “slickness” is when fans think it BJS. Slickness is exclusive to sequential defensive moves that are hard to pull off, and you attempt it by risk taking to please the crowd. You would see more Joe Calzaghe “slickness” at close range than you would BJS. And of course, the top is Sweet Pea, Floyd, Toney, Rigo, Loma, and now prime Canelo.

When I spar, there are times where I chose to just focus on constant footwork and defense when I see the guy’s mistakes. However I prefer to focus on high guards and countering to learn angles and repetitiveness. I learn the hard way cause use to do it myself and I would get figured out. Walking guys down imo is the hardest when you’re looking for that perfect shot and range.

It’s ironic, the best fights are unorthodox styles you don’t expect. Fury, Yarde, Canelo have shown closing the ring styles, pressuring out of their norm. Fury did it, got praised. Yarde did it, praised, but not good enough against Kovalev. Canelo did it with GGG 2, many say it wasn’t good enough and cry it was a “Draw.” Then Canelo does it against Kovalev because Yarde has success with it and is a more complete fighter and counter puncher than Yarde.

Yarde went for broke against Kovalev because he is huge. Paid the price.

BJS should attempt the same. If BJS does nothing and tries to look cute with one pot shot here and there that’s not good enough and just a copout. Mikey made no excuses when he lost to Spence. Mikey didn’t do anything different nor was effective in landing
