What an interesting fight. You've got Jesse Vargas who took four rounds from Manny and 6 rounds from Broner. Here, I had him winning, but JUST.
There were a couple of swing rounds.
Round 3 is one where people seem to have given it straight to Vargas. I didn't see it. He had a good start, minute 2 on, Mikey was sharper and more accurate.
Round 9 is a big one. I can see where someone gave it to Mikey, but I watched every punch he threw. They weren't doing anything to Jesse (Note should say Mikey, not Jesse). Landing, but not affecting him. He wasn't moving, his head wasn't moving and he was still coming forward. Meanwhile, Mikey had to reset every time Jesse hit him with a body shot.
Round 10, I could see giving to Mikey, but one thing I look for is, if you're effective in the first or last 30 seconds or minute of a round but otherwise doing nothing, there's no way I can give you the round if your opponent is still landing on you.
Any of those three rounds, I'm perfectly fine if you gave them to Mikey, and if you did, it explains the wide scorecard. It was a close fight only because Mikey wasn't active enough to put Vargas away and Vargas never fully recovered from the knockdown. So both guys were trying to match pace until the championship rounds when Jesse stepped it up.
Also, Round 5. Jesse got dropped but was still landing bombs on Mikey. That round could have been 10/9 in my opinion.
BTW - Round 12 - that smothering, that bullying, that's how Vargas should have fought starting from after he got dropped. I have no idea why he felt the need to keep trying to counter when it was clear that Mikey had adjusted. But Mikey never could handle that bullying tactic and looked horrible this round.
Mikey came off trying to fight like a slower version of Pipino Cuevas - popping in and out, landing for accuracy, tries to go to war when the opponent comes in but gets roughed up every time.
Anyway, not a robbery, a close fight, could have gone either way, a lot of swing rounds and two guys who were pacing themselves.
