    Joe Calzaghe and Deontay Wilder

I feel that Joe Calzaghe was similar to Wilder except that Calzaghe was never really shown up like Wilder was.

I think Wilder is great at what he does (KO artist) and Calzaghe obviously had fast hands... both went far on these skills alone.

I think a very old B-Hop should have been given a narrow decision over Calzaghe, or at least a draw. Either way, Calzaghe never officially lost.

I believe that Calzaghe, like Wilder, overachieved. Do you agree with me?

    Why or why not.

Can you think of any other boxers with one great skill that went further than they should have on that alone — whether they got shown up or not.

wilder made the mistake of fighting someone good(although by his own words he thought he was over the hill and out of shape) calzaghe made sure guys like hopkins and jones weren't threats at least to knock him out because he knew he could just throw a lot of ineffective punches and steal a decision so wasnt much of a risk even though hopkins landed all the clean punches. its all about picking your opponents. wilder could have gone on another 5 years ko'ing pbc bums but his hand was forced a bit by joshua and rejecting that 100 million. he knew he needed a name even if it was a washed up one to combat that but he chose wrong!

I think Calzaghe underachieved, despite winning world titles, ring magazine title in 2 divisions.

The times he did step up against good fighters like an undefeated Kessler, he showed he could beat them. Kessler went on to beat Froch and have another close fight with him.

Had Calzaghe fought better competition throughout his career, he may not have ended up undefeated, but i think he would have some wins over very good fighters. Calzaghe wasn’t even in his prime anymore when he stepped up. He was already mid 30’s. He spent his prime beating no hopers.

Let’s not forget Hopkins priced himself out of a Calzaghe fight years before they actually fought. He was considered high risk and low reward for a while.

So really i think he under achieved through his lack of desire to be great, or maybe he just wasn’t managed/promoted well enough early on. I think he could’ve done a lot more and beaten more good fighters.

Do not compare Wilder to Calzaghe. Wilder more like a poor man's Lacy or maybe even Mitchell since they are both punchers from Alabama.

Two completely different fighters. Also, anyone who thinks Hopkins beat Calzaghe is a fool. I've watched that fight at least 50 times. Never once did I score it for Hopkins.

And BTW, I'm from Canada. Let's not try and discredit Fury, by discrediting Wilder.

              Fury was the better man.

I'll say that, and I was backing Wilder.

Ahahahahahahaha......what a fail post. Zags crossed the ocean, moved up in weight, beat B-Hop who everyone swore would mop the floor with him, made Lacy look like trash, handed Kessler his first loss.

Wilder is and always was a fabricated star, just like Broner.

Wilder and Calzaghe are NOTHING like each other -- one of the daftest boxing ideas I've ever seen!! Wilder is a wild swiper, no technique, just about zero boxing skills. Calzaghe was very quick, great speed, footwork, and reflexes. He also had incredible hand-speed, threw lots of punches, including repeated combinations. It's often commented that he threw light punches, slapped even. Well, he had wrecked hands from early in his career, had several operations, couldn't train on heavy bag. BUT -- anyone doubting should find a pic of Jeff Lacy, after HE had been slapped for 12 rounds (face like burger mince). Or maybe ask the then unbeaten Kessler, WBA and WBC belt holder, why he couldn't walk through those light shots to KO yet another victim??? As for "Joe beat up old guys way past their prime" -- he had 2 payday fights against Jones and Hopkins, at Lt-hvy. Jones indeed was shot, but Hopkins won several world title fights AFTER that, against good oppos. Back when Calzaghe won his first world title (Eubank), an obvious domestic fight was v Collins, who'd beaten Nigel Benn (wins over McClellan, Iran Barkley, etc) and Eubank, he'[d also been DUCKED by Jones for years. Collins retired instead. Should tell you lots.

The only person who judged the fight for Hopkins was senile Adelaide Byrd. Wilder is the Jeff Lacy of heavyweights. Exposed when he jumped in competition.
