  • Is trash talking / bs part of the fun of a fight?

Do you enjoy the bs, swagger, and trash talking that many fighters dole out in the lead-up to a fight?

    Why or why not?

It’s not exactly my thing and yet I feel it can be pulled off, or else it can just be plain dumb.

Ali did a good job IMO. I liked his little rhymes and things that he’d compose to taunt his opponents or give commentary on the situation.

Wilder and Fury’s styles are less my cup of tea, but, I admit they’ve both said some classics.

I liked when Wilder said “the only belt he has is the one holding up his pants” or the “flying elbow kick”.

Can’t think of anything really witty hearing Fury say, but I imagine I’d find something if I tried. I liked when he took off his Marylin Monroe coat and yelled “I’m a fightin’ man” and riled up Wilder’s family in the lead up to the first fight — that was more of an intimidation move and less of a verbal barb but still cool. Fun, WWE style moment.

Probably my favorite however is Manny Pacquiao because he seems more calm and professional and lets his fists do the talking. That’s more my style.

I don't care about all that. I hardly watch press conferences. I'm all for the fight: the in-ring activities. Pre-fight talks are mostly fake, but if you need to hear a near honest comment from boxers, listen to their in-ring interviews immediately after a fight. For instances, if a fight ended in a controversial draw, such interviews would give you an idea of the true winner. The true loser would give excuses after excuses or go fully defensive when unnecessary.

Though not a draw fight, Lewis/Vitali easily comes to mind. Go check the post-fight in-ring interviews.

Trash talks are mostly for the casuals and fanatics. I don't really have a favourite fighter nor am I a cult follower of anyone. I'm a fan of fights. Fights! Fights!! Fights!!!

      I'm not a fan.

Ali managed it because he had wit and charisma that were off the charts. He was a lovable jerk.

So many people try to copy him, but they don't have the with or charisma to pull it off. So they don't come across as lovable jerks - they just come across as jerks.

I love all the pageantry of boxing.

When a fighter talks shit fans cant help but to feel some type of way about it, either they love it or hate, but it emotionally charges them and causes them to invest a lil something more than just your viewership it forces apart of you to be invested in the fight its the reason these fighters are rooted for heavy or hated heavy. You just have to look at broner to see that, Hes been a dud for the past years but still his fights are some of the top viewed fights cause of that "PERSONA" of his, he has everyone feeling some type of way either for or against him all cause of his shit talking, you/we/us are invested in him so we watch his fights and who he fights don't really matter at this point, we only care cause ITS BRONER and his persona made that happen not his boxing.

I love all the aspects of a fight. The tension, the mind games, in and out of it. We've seen countless fights dictated by tactics outside if the ring. SRL vs Duran 1 was dictated by everything Duran did before the fight and it lead to one of the best fights of all time.

          Frazier vs Ali 3 also.

I mean its not a video game where you pick two guys then fight, boxing is mental and the war starts as soon as contracts are signed. Its interesting seeing how everything plays out.

I find trash talking annoying, ******, classless and unneeded. It won't change the outcome of the fight. You can be the world's greatest trash talker but you still have to get in the ring and fight and your trash talking skills won't help you. I seldom watch trash talking as it is a waste of time to me. I am a fan of good boxing and fighting, not talking. If a boxer is getting trash talked by his opponent I think it is OK for him to respond with his own trash talk. But I don't admire boxers for their trash talking skill.

              I agree here.

Yes, we all tune in for the fights, but the build up, the drama, the personalities, the hype, it's all part of it.

And HBO 24/7 is hard to replace, they did a good job of bringing it all together.

                It is psychological warfare.

What exactly at times do you think happens on in these forums? On the sly some people duke it out during debates on here etc I believe it is just part of competition within boxing 'It does not entirely mean much, but I honestly believe some boxers enjoy it'.

Boxing at it's best is theater 'Broadway'.

Thanks for sharing! I also think trash talking can add some excitement to a fight, but it needs to be done properly. Ali is a legend at it. I also like how Manny Pacquiao keeps his cool and lets his skills do the talking. It's really fun to see different styles of fighters! rice purity score meaning
