I consider most techniques that aren't used very often as unorthodox. I consider Loma's slapping his opponents' gloves away as unorthodox since most fighters don't do this but I don't know. What do you guys think?

Slapping gloves away isn’t unorthodox. People just never notice it because it’s a subtle move.
It’s not done a lot because it’s dangerous to reach out and not punch out. You see it more commonly used against someone who has their back against the ropes and earmuffs on as they can’t get a shot off while in this defensive posture.

The philly shell evolved from
Archie Moore’s lock style which has been around forever. That means its not so far removed from a traditional style which disqualifies it from the “unorthodox” label.Last edited by TheMyspaceDayz; 02-04-2020, 03:28 AM.

The philly shell is 110%unorthodox that's why so many great orthodox fighters struggled with that style . Few men were truly great at it at the top level and I think that says alot . The shell is a forgotten art imo . I can't think of one top active fighter who fights that way at all times .

I thought Archie Moore came up with it. Very cool. I can understand that. What's a technique that you consider unorthodox?

Canelo's ability to slap body jabs downward or even off his high guard is more skilled ''unorthodox'' than Loma slapping high guards. A guy like Canelo will rocket launcher to the body if you're a sloppy high guarder, no need for slapping gloves the way Loma does it.

Fixed my post. Meant to say “it’s dangerous to reach out and not punch out”
Unorthodox is Roy Jones or Ali or anyone who you can’t crack a text book on. There is no text book on those styles because they invented it and it’s damn near impossible to replicate.

Frazier had no right hand, which is what Cooper caught Holyfield with. Similar defense between those two but Evander was better equipped to parry left hooks and counter with body shots. That makes it a tough night for Joe.
