  • Is the Philly Shell defense Unorthodox?

I consider most techniques that aren't used very often as unorthodox. I consider Loma's slapping his opponents' gloves away as unorthodox since most fighters don't do this but I don't know. What do you guys think?

I feel lomas slap move is super cute . He gets everyone with it . But the guy is the perfect example of a great orthodox technical boxer , but he definately has suddle moves that come off as unorthodox but alot of it is super old school . The philly shell is 110%unorthodox that's why so many great orthodox fighters struggled with that style . Few men were truly great at it at the top level and I think that says alot . The shell is a forgotten art imo . I can't think of one top active fighter who fights that way at all times .

Slapping gloves away isn’t unorthodox. People just never notice it because it’s a subtle move.

It’s not done a lot because it’s dangerous to reach out and not punch out. You see it more commonly used against someone who has their back against the ropes and earmuffs on as they can’t get a shot off while in this defensive posture.

      The philly shell evolved from
Archie Moore’s lock style which has been around forever. That means its not so far removed from a traditional style which disqualifies it from the “unorthodox” label.

Great breakdown, man. I feel smarter now. Haha. Yeah, I love seeing old school moves come back.

Yeah, I've noticed that when Loma does slap the gloves away, the opponent is usually against the ropes with the ear muffs on.

I thought Archie Moore came up with it. Very cool. I can understand that. What's a technique that you consider unorthodox?

Canelo's ability to slap body jabs downward or even off his high guard is more skilled ''unorthodox'' than Loma slapping high guards. A guy like Canelo will rocket launcher to the body if you're a sloppy high guarder, no need for slapping gloves the way Loma does it.

Fixed my post. Meant to say “it’s dangerous to reach out and not punch out”

Unorthodox is Roy Jones or Ali or anyone who you can’t crack a text book on. There is no text book on those styles because they invented it and it’s damn near impossible to replicate.

However seeing them come back and be bastardized is no good . As fun as bert cooper was, I was a fan . Frazier tried to make him copy his style and it didnt work to well for him . Although cooper got holy on short notice I think he proved that night that joe Frazier would have been a very tough fight for holy . Weve seen the shell be effective against all types of fighters it is a hard technique to learn , but it even harder to figure out . Fun question that I dont know the answer to off the top of my head .....when have we ever seen two fighters who use the philly shell square off ?? Becuase I can recall anything from the modern era of boxing ( let's say around the 30s , when the neutral corner became a thing ) and that says alot too , there were not many great shell fighters even in the day when it was most common . Who do u think used the shell the best ??

                  ^^^^

Frazier had no right hand, which is what Cooper caught Holyfield with. Similar defense between those two but Evander was better equipped to parry left hooks and counter with body shots. That makes it a tough night for Joe.

Wasn't it Angelo Dundee who trained the philly shell? Yeh, very specialised, suits some but not many.
