yes exactly Tony...logically it just makes sense to me that the GGG version is more or less true...to come out with that story 2 years later, I mean I just don't see how anyone would make that up.

And if they did, it would probably have been refuted right away, as you alluded to.

Funny because in Dec '13, GGG himself put off the idea of fighting Ward: "First, I need the upcoming fight in February to be successful. I believe that I now have an excellent [strategic layout] for next year. And regarding the future, I'm hoping that a fight takes place with Ward, but now is not the time. The fight is [a] realistic [idea], but not right now," https://www.boxingscene.com/golovkin...not-now--73235

The following month in January '14, Abel straight up said it was unfair to ask GGG to step up and fight the "king" of the 168 division because according to him GGG hadn't even separated himself from the pack at 160 or fully developed his "repertoire". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0ugadMjM9k @7:25 (Never mind that team GGG were the ones who said he'd face anyone between 154-168) GGG was nearly 32 years old at the time, had held a title since '10 with his team bragging about how he'd chase bigger men out of the gym and insisting he'd fight at 168, all while complaining about their lack of high profile fights, but somehow in the next minute they talk about him as if he were a mere prospect.

Team GGG would turn around and once again insist they would fight at 168, but this time emphasized against the likes of Chavez and Froch while specifically ruling out Ward citing a lack of financial incentive. Ward-GGG would have been legacy defining with the winner being elevated to next level stardom yet according to GGG it wasn't worthy of their time?-- and they'd continue making various excuses while apparently never seriously considering it.

Even putting the Ward fight aside: The thing about GGG is his legacy involves a lot of revisionism and mythmaking. He was hyped as a take on all comers fighter eager to prove himself when he's never been highly ambitious with his comfort zone being feasting against B level opposition.

His comfort zone was stating at the MW division trying to unify and ducking no one there. Not too bad.

He didn't want to move up or down unless it made financial sense. That's what all fighters do.

He's now not persuing a Charlo or Andrade fight, I give you that, but he's 37 now. When he was 26/35 he fought the best available.

He accepted the fight in 2013 when it meant something for him.

Yeah, boring, but the whole point is that Gennady agreed to fight Ward in 2013 and Ward said no. Period.
