Why do some forget that GGG accepted the Ward fight in 2013?

Bro...Ward never made any money in those days either...he was a never was then, and GGG was clearly just as big of a star as Ward then, probably bigger...Ward never sniffed any type of relevance until the Kovalev fights, and just before that when Ward amped up his feud with GGG who was a star in the sport at that point.

HBO offered them both probably career high paydays for that fight as well.

And all of that is beside the point anyway...Ward didn't turn down the fight because it didn't make money/GGG wasn't a test (everyone would have said he was, even then)...Ward turned it down because of his own personal issues, so he says...but truthfully he probably turned it down because it was a very high risk low reward fight...and Ward was always protective of his 0 so he didn't like those types of risky fights.

I don't mind boxers/fighters making smart business decisions...but I think what happened between GGG and Ward in 2013 is pretty clear...and then also in 2016 when Ward sent in that offer...I think it was pretty clear that it was a way to get him some attention...he knew GGG had Canelo/Cotto winner next and was always going to go that route.

No. Golovkin was literally a no name in 2013. Even the TS who's a massive nuthugger admits that.

Maybe he was trying to be polite? I mean saying no he's a nobody while he's in the meeting would be a bit harsh.

They guy just went through the super 6 and fought a P4P fighter but you think he was afraid of a no name Golovkin? C'mon talk sense.

For the record I made a lot of other points in that post as well .

But on that note - GGG made his US debut vs Proksa in 2012 and his rise to 'stardom' started at that point...arguing exactly how big of a star he is at that time is rather meaningless as it is impossible to quantify...his fight with Rosado in early 2013 helped to put him on the map as well.

At that point, Golovkin was already pretty known to hardcore fans, but he wasn't making millions yet since he wasn't known by any casual.

Making 1-2 millions against Ward would have been a great payday for him at that point, since he wasn't making 1M per fight yet. And in case of loss, he could have gone back to 160 and persue the best MW's as usual. So Golovkin accepted the offer.

Ward turned the fight down, stating that he had some shoulder and legal issues.

Ward offered the fight to Golovkin again in 2016, when Golovkin was a boxing star in line for a huge (or many) paydays vs Canelo and other big fighters in the MW division.

Kovalev only made 3M (total) in two fights against Ward. Offering Golovkin that type of money, even if upped to 5M, didn't make any sense for moving up when you are about to make 20M+ per fight against Canelo, in your own division.

GGG never ducked Ward. He wanted the fight when it made sense for him. Fortunately for Ward, he could find someone else to make a big fight, and it was Kovalev. And we all know what happened. First fight, Kova won, second fight, Ward won.
BTW TS is a liar. Ward offered the fight at the beginning of 2015. Canelo was still at 154. This little story about Ward turning down the fight was told by Golovkin in 2015 while avoiding the fight, saying Ward was dead to him.

Nope. Ward offered the fight to GGG sending an email in 2015, when GGG was negotiating his unification fight against Lemieux. Wards proposal was for a fight in 2016. In 2016 Golovkin was expected to fight for the WBC MW title.

In 2015 GGG was unifying and also mandatory for the WBC MW title, against Cotto or Canelo.

            You need to try better.

This news from January 2015 shows Golovkin was already WBC mandatory for Cotto's title: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...2015/21691057/

Even if Wards proposal was around that time, GGG had better things waiting for him already at his division.

Yet his team kept mentioning Wards name. When Ward offered the fight Golovkin went running.

It's the truth. They mentioned Ward's name all the damn time. Ward even pulled Loeffler up on it at a fight. But when the man offered the fight they suddenly didn't want it. Like the anyone from 154-168, all the belts is my dream and Mexican stlyle, it was all BS to build Golovkins name.
