Wilder says Lineal title meaningless, because Lennox Lewis can come back and claim it

Wilder says he never even heard of the term "Lineal" champion before Fury came back in 2018 and claimed he was the Lineal champ. He said it doesn't mean anything, because by Fury's definition, Lennox Lewis can announce he's coming out of retirement and claim he's the Lineal champ.

Wilder: "I guess if [Lennox Lewis] comes back we'll have two [Lineal Champions]."

Honestly Lewis would defeat Wilder if he had enough time to bring in appropriate sparring partners . But Wilder himself said lineal is over unification last year so he’s going back on his statement when he didn’t win .

I can’t help but think the likes of Lewis and the Klitschko brothers aren’t licking their lips at Wilder .

No he couldn’t because a new lineage was established.

The reason the whole Fury lineal situation is so murky is because a new lineage was not established in his absence.

Whether you consider Fury as lineal or not that debate ends Feb 22, as the 1 vs 2 are meeting for the lineal title, so one way or another a lineage will be established.

        It is meaningless

Still, out of the heavyweights today, only Fury can say he’s ever been the true top guy in the division, when he beat Wlad. He’s the only one that beat the genuine number 1 to become it

AJ and Wilder can’t say it.

I don’t think the term lineal champ really makes much sense though. It’s a nonsense title but it doesn’t take away the fact Fury was the man in the division, no questions asked. Nobody has beaten or been a consensus number 1 since.

Whether Fury still deserves that status as the man after 3 years out is another argument. But he did really beat Wilder, so I guess he can still be considered the man.

He’s exactly right. Fury retired and said as much multiple times.

It is meaningless now because Tyson won it from Wlad but then lost it by n ot defending it for over three years. Like any other title it must be defended within a reasonable amount of time. Lewis could not claim it because he has been out of boxing too long. Wlad became recognized as the new consensus lineal champion by beating all challengers. Wlad can't claim it either because he lost it to Fury. If Fury had defended it in a reasonable amount of time he would be the lineal champ right now. But three years is way too long so he lost it and Wilder and AJ became the new champions but neither of them is the lineal champ either because they are not undisputed. The lineal title is vacant now and Fury is not a champion of any kind even though he tries to claim he is the lineal champ. Only when the WBC champ fights AJ or anyone who beats AJ and takes his belts and we get a winner of that fight will we have a true undisputed lineal champion.

Fury's absence was shorter than the amount of time between the defenses of some of the previous lineal champions.

The lineage is restored no matter what as long as we get a winner next month.

Wilder and Fury are the #1 and #2 fighters at TBRB and The Ring. Fury is still recognized as lineal champion by some, while others consider the title vacant due to Fury's on/off retirements/PED break.

Either way, the winner of this fight is going to be recognized as the real world champion by the WBC, the Ring, the TBRB, and everybody else who keeps track of boxing lineage.

Whether Wilder understands or cares about lineage, and whether or not he cares about the Ring belt, is irrelevant. If he wins, he's the champ. If Fury wins, he's the champ.
