I've three, at least three, worth note from before the Queensberry Marquee.
1.) Greatest ever of all time and it ain't even close; Melankomas of Caria. It's the first century AD, Jesus would be about 50 if JC saw 50. Melankomas had thousands of fights, was the undisputed champion in his era, and had never once suffered a landing blow in a legitimate fight. So perfected was his guard the peoples in towns he'd run through made a game of trying to catch him unawares and pop outta nowhere like a ninja to land a blow, if they could....they could not.
Of course Mel could be more myth than man he gets that good old ancient grain of salt and a bit of a shrug but I reckon he is worth note. His story is worth sharing....JIC that **** is true or at least true-ish
2.) Daniel The *** Mendoza brought fencing techniques into the game and is credited with being the origins of several parts of modern boxing, defense, defensive posture, position fighting, movement, and of course baiting and countering all fall under The *** and The *** never lost a fair fight. His era conspired against him to force him into accepting a loss and didn't even bother to do so under any coverage; they ere flagrant, blatant, and antagonistic with it.
3.) Henry The Game Chicken Pearce. The only unbeaten HW defensive champion. Right at the heart of LPRR when bare knuckle was really rough as ****, Hen came with the science and taught the oldens some new tricks.

outside of him, great list. Might think of Moore as a defensive fighter what with his elbows routine, catching them blows and returning fire is a solid D based style, just because his returns were massive doesn't make him a D based fighter.
And a note on PBF. He was aggressive as PBF, yes, but did he lack defense? Floyd Mayweather was always a hard fighter to hit. As he moved up his punches did less damage to his new, bigger, opposition so he focused on his movement and guard more but at no point was Floyd ever a puncher or anything like a fighter with no concern for defense.
The only person Floyd EVER walked down was McNugget the hammerfisting MMA bum.Comment

other than floyd mayweather?
ali did not have great defense. he was just incredibly fast in the 60'a and very long. once the 70's rolled around he was not hard to hit and was in some real wars.Comment
