Why do you think the UFC went exclusive with PPV on the ESPN+ APP, they were tired of paying 40-50% of their take and the cable operators refused to budge.

This past June from Arum himself.

Arum believes the pay-per-view model will never die, but he wants to find a way to negotiate down the high percentages being taken by the cable and satellite providers - which in turn would allow the promoters and networks to cut down the price of pay-per-view.

"The pay-per-view model will never die. It's always going to be there, it's good. But maybe we can find ways to cut the price that that cable and satellite providers take, so we can cut the price down," Arum said to BoxingScene.com.

And UFC COO On Why They Left Cable/Satellite With PPV:

Why did the UFC do this?

That’s simple. Financially, it’s almost certainly a great deal for the UFC. ESPN will pay the UFC a “license fee” on the front end for the right to sell the promotion’s pay-per-view cards. And then, presumably, the UFC will still make a percentage in PPV revenue on the back end. It’s unclear what that percentage split will be between ESPN and the UFC and neither side will disclose it.

“We’re not commenting on any of the financial parts of this deal, but obviously they’re paying a license fee to us,” Epstein said.

With cable and satellite providers, the UFC reportedly got 50 percent of PPV revenue and was apparently angling for more, per reports. As recently as last month, the UFC was in dispute with DirecTV and its easy to imagine the move to ESPN+ has at least something to do with that.

Plus, the UFC gets to make ESPN its one-stop shop in the U.S. for just about all live programming, and getting even more cozy with the worldwide leader in sports is not a bad thing. For ESPN this is a no-brainer, because it gives UFC fans an even greater reason to sign up for ESPN+.

“This is just an opportunity that we just couldn’t pass up to fully align with ESPN and all the resources they have,” Epstein said. “The first 2-1/2 months, this relationship with ESPN has exceeded our expectations and I feel confident in saying it’s exceeded ESPN’s expectations. And so, we said, ‘Hey, we’re off to a great start, let’s make this thing bigger.’ It definitely wasn’t the plan, but I think just the momentum we got at the start of this relationship got us talking about this.”
    You guys aren’t understanding.

The cable or Satellite provider we order from: Comcast, Buckeye, DirectTV etc gets $5 per order.

The channel doing the PPV in a partnership with the promotion gets 50% after the fight makes money.

So PBC was paid a right Fee from FOX to air the fight, want Fox collects there right ya fee the remaining profit is split 50-50.

The reason Dazn isn’t working- they are fronting all the money and taking a loss on every fight.

Hence why they have to raise Half a Billion for upcoming rights fees.

PBC on the other hand, gets there fights covered up front from Fox or Showtime. And collect 50% of the revenue when the fight goes green.

Big difference is sponsorship money. A Fox PPV is getting 10 X the sponsorship money than a Dazn Canelo fight gets as advertisers have built on contracts.

I own a large large marketing and sports media agency, half the contracts you guys see are negotiated by us. Hell the signed contracts are written by our lawyers.

You guys are really missing the boat and who is profitable and who is not in Boxing today.

100% Dazn is completely screwed. The model does not work unless they are worldwide and they do not have the capital to be available in every country in the world.

It’s a shame. But it’s bad bad bad business. And a lot of people are gonna lose a lot of money. Including Mr Hearn.

        • Thomas Hauser is known to put hot sauce in his stories and I've called him out on it before and he gave some BS response that it's okay, that is just one point of the story...WTF? Anyways, saying that, is this series on DAZN even necessary? I mean good info about DAZN having shares in Matchroom USA, but it was kind of hinted before when Hearn said they had a partnership.

The rest about losing money is obvious. DAZN unable to sustain giving these pay days is obvious. But for the 10000th time, boxing is such a small factor in if DAZN will be successful in the long run. If they don't get any of the big sports leagues, then they will have a small reign stateside. Or at the very least they change up their strategy and probably just focus on the likes of Canelo.

            • Sorry but the $70 PPV model is dead as a door knob.

People stream those numbers and that trend is projected to increase exponentially.

                • Hearn is likeable as long as he brings $70 American level PPVs for $10 a month. What's really crazy is paying $70 for a mismatch or paying showtime $19 per month for sub par showcase junk.

Sorry but the way fans and fighters worship the PBC and Top Rank is classic Stockholm Syndrome.

That is not true at all. And I Believed your other post until this one. Canelo was not offered less for Andrade he was offered $5m more than Derevyanchenko! Andrade didn’t ask for nearly what anyone else got for Canelo and Andrade said yes within hours of being offered the fight. The fact is DAZN wanted the Canelo Andrade fight but they kept getting jerked around by Canelo’s side until finally Canelo cost DAZN even more by making them pay much more for Kovalev ! DAZN wanted Andrade but Golden Boy didn’t until the last second when Derevyanchenko pulled out !! Then Golden Boy made an offer to Andrade and never expected Andrade’s side to say yes at that price but when Andrade’s side said he’ll yes we’ll fight him then they went back to Kovalev and overpaid him instead !!! Anyone that says otherwise doesn’t know the truth !!

No, you just don't get it.

PBC on FOX has 10 free fights a year on the main FOX channel..which has brought boxing back into the mainstream .

They do 100000X a better job than promoting those fights than DAZN does for their most major fights.

See below. The JRoc fight later this month just got that dropped today for promo. Where is the Demetreus Andrade version of this on DAZN USA's youtube channel? It doesn't exist.

                      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v09-x0SNlJU

When has this ever been done for free fights? The proof is in the ratings which have been amazing. JRoc is steadily going to surpass Andrade in popularity by the end of this month, thanks to the promotion of PBC on FOX.

DAZN is NOT healthy for boxing. They are burying it with their lack of exposure and laziness in building fighters. Guys are becoming unkown boxers fighting on DAZN.

DAZN only promotes Joshua, Canelo and GGG, they severely need to step it up in 2020.
