I work with prostate cancer patients daily.. If you're in your 40s or over and have never had your prostate checked, please go to your physician and ask for a check. You can get a simple blood test (PSA test) which can detect if there's an abnormally high amount of prostate cells in your body which could indicate cancer, an enlarged prostate or an infection. You can also get the doctor to check with a finger if that isn't daunting for you (they can feel the prostate through the an'al wall and tell if there's a lump - 75% of prostate tumours are at the rear of the prostate so can potentially be detected in this way).
If tumour is within prostate then surgical removal of the prostate will cure almost all men. If it has spread outside the prostate they will give you treatment to suppress your testosterone as this promotes the cancer's growth. With no testosterone in your body the tumour growth will be halted and you will then have radiotherapy to zap the prostate and kill all the cells within. If you are not terminally ill they'll allow your testosterone will eventually return to normal eventually.
If you are black you're twice as likely to get prostate cancer as a white man. And if you have it then you're dad/brother/son/nephew has a very very good chance of getting it so please ask them to get checked every 1-2 years. Also any female relatives may have a higher chance of getting breast cancer.
Prostate cancer is no joke! Symptoms include regularly needing to wee (more than normal), needing to wee more at night, lower back pain, pain when urinating, blood in urine, weaker erections/ED, blood in semen. Some men have no symptoms at all!Comment
