They were probably thinking that he finished the year with back-to-back and three of four FOTY awards. No one else won more than one. He also finished the decade by winning titles in 4 different weight classes in 20 months. So there's those things. To compare 90s Jordan to 00s Mayweather is not just asinine, it's quite frankly disrespectful.
