Comments Thread For: Ellerbe 'Really Surprised' Gamboa Took So Much Punishment

ATLANTA Leonard Ellerbe expected Yuriorkis Gamboa to give Gervonta Davis a tougher fight than most people anticipated. Even Ellerbe was surprised, though, that the game Gamboa was still standing entering the final round of their WBA world lightweight title fight Saturday night at State Farm Arena. Davis knocked down Gamboa in the second and eighth rounds, and appeared on the verge several times of finishing his 38-year-old opponent before they reached the 12th round.

That’s right. You expected your boy Davis’s power to carry up, didn’t you? Lol

Translation: “we hand picked him because of his glass chin, hoping we would get a quick highlight reel KO.”

Gamboa took punishment, but it's not like he was getting rocked every second of every round. Davis took a LOT of time off in that fight. I don't understand how all of Mayweather's proteges are Chris Arreola training camp clients.

The intent was clear. They wanted a named but harmless opponent. There was never any doubt Tank would get the win against a corpse, but no one expected that kind of resistance. I wouldn’t say the plan exactly backfired, but I think Davis definitely lost some shine on Saturday.

I remember a couple of videos that showed Mayweather watching Davis intently while he was shadow boxing and working the heavy bag. It looked like he had a closer relationship with him than he did with Broner. You'd also think that promoters would be more authoritative about that type of thing, because it's hard to sell a fat lightweight (or so you'd think). Gamboa was fed to Davis, so maybe Davis took him lightly and just didn't pay for it.

It appears Davis took this fight lightly and didn’t properly train for it. He just didn’t seem to have the stamina to press the action. He really should’ve steamrolled Gamboa.

Because Floyd puts these guys at the finishing line before the race has even started. Cars, ***ellery and balling before realising what it takes to win the race.
