THROWBACK: Lennox Lewis vs. Shannon Briggs

For those who only know fights like Joshua Ruiz 2 with one big muscular guy constantly on the move against a short, fat opponent that clearly has power.

For the people who watch Wilder fights and think, "so we're just waiting to see if he lands...?"

Lennox Lewis vs. Shannon Briggs remains one of my favorite overall contests. Briggs was lineal champion fresh off beating (and retiring) George Foreman.

Worth seeing the full fight if you get time, but this gives the best moments of the fight and helps remind us of what heavyweight boxing used to be like at its peak.

Yea I like that fight and have watched a dozen times over the years. I remember 2 main things from this fight: 1) anybody could be hurt in the heavyweight division 2) Lennox Lewis is the best heavyweight that ever lived

Briggs was gifted a decision over an even more ancient Foreman. Foreman won 7 rounds. Foreman clearly beat the roided cheat and decided to quit because he knew that was truly the end of his miracle comeback not because Briggs beat him and retired him.

I'm sorry, did you just say that George Foreman quit against Shannon Briggs?

It was Foreman’s last fight. Quit boxing, not cried about a bloody nose or some such drivel.

Okay but, let's be clear here. Whether you think Foreman should have won or not, Briggs got his hand raised against a legit opponent and became lineal champion.

Foreman had already said that he was thinking of hanging it up well before this fight but wanted to see how far he could go.

A similar match with superior fighters is 1976’s Fight Of the Year. George Forman VS Ron Lyle.

I didn’t think the fight was that close. Briggs won a few rounds but 5 rounds would have been a stretch imo.

No I implied that he quit the sport. I clearly stated he beat Briggs and won at least 7rounds. Nobody made Big George quit. Impossible. That's a Chavez Jr. move or something that happens to guys who fight Lomanchenko.
