It's been awhile since I've revisited the original series. Does Apollo specifically establish that he's just on hiatus at any point? I could be wrong. Regardless, I think it's pretty clear that the series' angle on that development is icy rivalry gradually giving way to mutual respect and male bonding that develops over the course of III and is then in full effect in IV with Rock and Apollo basically being the two closest buds to ever walk the earth. Not some kind of subservient act of weakness from Apollo.

Why didn't he think could take on and beat Clubber?

He Battered Rocky for 30 rounds winning probably 25+ rounds, and only loss the second fight by a second.

For 5 years? Then he was clearly still active before the first fight with Clubber.

For the Drago fight, he said he never felt better, and he wanted to put on a show and embarrassed Drago.

Did he even study the tapes on Drago?

I mean, I do see your point. Is there a plot thread I'm not remembering, where Creed is retired but reluctantly, Ie. to placate his wife etc? That would explain a lot as to the decision to pass the torch vs gunning for Clubber himself (and the initial friction between Rocky aand Creed at the outset of training). I'm fuzzy on a lot of small details like I said. At the same time, it can pretty much be whatever you want it to be, so hey. If III's plot.developments make Apollo the ultimate simp to you I say roll with it
