  • Comments Thread For: Arum: The Problem In Boxing Is We Can't Sell Tickets To Fights

NEW YORK Bob Arum understands why boxing fans haven't exactly expressed an abundance of interest in the Terence Crawford- Egidjius Kavaliauskas fight his company is promoting. Crawford is listed by most Internet and Las Vegas sports books as at least a 16-1 favorite to defeat the unbeaten Lithuanian contender Saturday night. Their 12-round welterweight championship match is widely viewed as a fight Crawford can't lose partially due to the undefeated Crawford's considerable skill, yet also because Kavaliauskas fought to a 10-round majority draw with unheralded Ray Robinson in his last fight.

There's a typo in the title. It actually should say:

Arum: The Problem With Crawford Is He Can't Sell Tickets To Fights

But Arum isn't like De La Hoya, so he hides his true intentions in his words.

Put crawford in Omaha and he sells out. What promoters in the USA need to understand that putting on fights in the fighters home city is the best option. Save the MSGs and the Vegas fights for the super fights. Boxing in the USA has to go back to the local level and grow fan bases. NY sports fans have no attachment to Crawford especially when he is fighting a no name.

Big mistake. But that's more about who Crawford's fighting than anything.

You put Crawford in there with Shawn Porter in NY, CA or NV, it's going to sell out. Not because of Crawford, because of Showtime (Shawn), especially off his performance against Spence. Then Crawford gets exposed to a larger audience that wants to come see him fight. Now of course, I think Shawn Porter bullies the hell out of him and goes to a contested SD (which will cause people to say Crawford was 'exposed'), but then we at least know for sure whether people's eyes are lying to them about Crawford, like Spence said.

The other thing to consider: nobody's going to fly to Omaha, so you're only getting local people. People flew to NV and NY to see UK guys come over and fight.

At some point we need to stop blaming the venue and come to grips with the fact that Terence Crawford is an 'eye test' fighter, is NOT P4P anything, hasn't been tested and isn't a draw. I mean that's fine - he can keep collecting his guaranteed 3-5 million for sparking out the C and B classes. More power to him.

lmao Shawn Porter didn’t sell out vs Spence, Garcia or Thurman. What Arum needs to do is buy tickets to his own events like PBC does
