  • Comments Thread For: Braekhus Dominates Bustos; Makes 25th Straight Title Defense

Cecilia Braekhus beat up Victoria Bustos for much of their 10-round fight Saturday night. The long-reigning, undisputed women's welterweight champion picked apart the Argentinean veteran and easily defended her five 147-pound championships at Casino de Monte Carlo in Monte Carlo. The Colombian-born, Norwegian-bred Braekhus basically toyed with the tough but overmatched Bustos.

    Cecilia Braekhus today:
-won her 36th fight in 36 tries, none with ANY controversy
-defended her unified WBA/WBC welterweight titles for the 25th straight time (champ since March 2009)
-defended her unified WBA/WBC/WBO welterweight titles for the 23rd straight time
-defended her undisputed WBA/WBC/WBO/IBF welterweight titles for the 10th straight time
-defended her undisputed WBA/WBC/WBO/IBF/IBO welterweight titles for the 8th straight time

Most consecutive title defenses of ANY sanctioning body, Ring, or lineal title for any weight class or gender:
    1. Joe Louis, 26
    2. Cecilia Braekhus, 25

And the commentary team spent more time praising Katie Taylor than anything else. Disgraceful.

Eddie Hearn said they were going to do another spring fight for each woman, and then hopefully Braekhus vs Taylor in the summer.

He didn't say what weight, though. 140, 147, or a catch?

I wanna see Katie give Delfine her rematch first. Only problem is Cecilia gonna be about 40 by the time that happens I'm guessing.

McCaskill for the 140 belts. Then Breakaus at 140. Then back to 135.

That could work I guess, at least Delfine's the youngest of the 3 potential opponents, but I still say she should have got an immediate rematch.

Funny thing is Persoons getting lighter whilst Katie's getting heavier... and it's hard to see Cecilia coming down to 140 now, she ain't fought there in over a decade, so I'm guessing Katie would go up to Welter. Two divisions is a long way down assuming Katie and Delfine would remtch at 135.... if that is the plan (and I assume Hearn signing Braekhus at her age was largely to make sure of the Taylor fight) I'm doubting we see the Persoon rematch.

Pointing out that she is about to accomplish something only Joe Louis has accomplished doesn't mean they are equating her to Joe Louis. It just contextualizes her achievement.

I don't think anyone is actually claiming she's as good as Joe Louis, but what she has done - even given the limited talent pool in the womens sport - is unprecedented amongst modern era fighters.

All you can ever do is compare a fighter to their peers, man, whether it's within a weightclass or a within a gender and for over a decade since she won her first title no-one's even come close to beating the First Lady.

Sure, if you don't follow the ladies sport or whatever, or think it's some kinda freakshow like some of the idiots on here then fair enough, no-ones making you watch that ish, but anyone who's head and shoulders above their rivals for so long in any field of endeavour deserves some recognition in my book.
