  • Deontay Wilder chasing Mayweather's record

Wilders KO of Ortiz was very impressive. He is a great Athlete.

However, when he then says that he is on track to equal or beat Floyd Mayweather's 50-0 record, I find it hard to keep that respect for any more than 5 minutes.

More than 50% of Wilder's fights have been against nobodies. Arguably, his first "big" fight was Audley Harrison.

Following the Ortiz fight, he started claiming that people MUST start taking his record and abilities seriously. How can you take his record seriously when half of his career has been a joke!

I'm really open to being proven wrong because his KO of Breazeale and now, Ortiz, was highlight.

all of his career is a joke if koing a man who never contended, nowin his 40s is his piece de resistance.

    Outpointing Bermane was better though.

I guess a draw with Fury is worth something.

Wilder and Mayweather shouldn't be mentioned in the same thread. Wilder and that asian guy that already beat "Mayweathers record" should though. Both have resumes full of nobodies.

Well, the HW division isn't and never has been as deep as the WW division, so as long as Wilder fights and defeats all the names of the era, then what else can be expected of him? He'll fight Fury, AJ and Ruiz for sure. If he beats the Dubois, Joyce's and the rest of the next generation before retiring then he will be regarded as one of the great HWs. All of that is a good ways off though. Got to start with a definitive win in the Fury rematch.

I think there is a group of fans that do think 50-0 is some kind of record. As diehard , knowledgeable boxing fans, we know this isn't the case. If Wilder and Floyd can use 50-0 to generate interest among casuals, so be it.

I don't see how he can say he is going after Mayweather's record when he just fought to a draw with Fury. A draw is not a win and Mayweather has no draws.

                Yep, great point.
Its the comments he makes about what he's done before fighting Ortiz and Fury that bothers me.

He would have so much more respect from me if he just looked in the mirror and was real with himself. 'Ok, yeah, I've not fought at the highest level for my whole career, I'm no Lewis, Tyson or Klitshcko but maybe one day I'll be there'. Being a bit humble would be better than screaming "BOMBSQUAD" to something when he has no answer.

At this point in time, the only thing that he has said that is 100% true 'They have to be perfect for 36 minutes, I only have to be perfect for 2 seconds'...nailed it.

                  54-0 > 50-0

                  Wanheng Menayothin > Floyd Mayweather
