Eddie Hearn confirming the promoters pay off writers

I saw the boxing social interview with Dan. I can't believe they're being so pathetic as to refuse to send their guys out to cover "the enemy", citing budget constraints. It's ridiculous and incredibly short sighted. For context, this is why Eddie offered to pay for the trip - calling their bluff.Comment

Isnt there some confusion going on here as to what a youtube channel is? No way should they be called legit journalists or writers, lol. Just chancers with a camera who found a niche and exploited it. Promoters have a right to use them how they see fit and cut them off if they have a problem with them. Which I suspect Fighthype have got their panties in a twist over, pissed off Hearn and he only gives them 5 minutes of his time now.Comment

How is it more unethical for Hearn to pay Dans expenses to cover his fights than it is for ESPN to pay him to cover theirs? Whoever you're writing for, man, someone is paying for it...
'Less you're freelancing of course, but then good luck paying for your own tickets and travel and expenses and hoping your article is close enough to someone's angle for them to pick it up and pay you for it.Comment

Nobody covering fights have tickets given to them. They get credentialed as media. That's standard practice across all sports. What's not standard practice is a league/promoter buying or comping travel and rooms for coverage. That breaks all journalism ethics. I'm sure ESPN doesn't agree with this practice. This would be a big story in any other industry. Matter of fact I remember a similar situation being a big deal during the Bush yearsComment

Exactly but people don't seem to have a problem with it. They don't understand they're not getting objective news. They're getting slanted/bias news. At the very least Dan should've included a disclaimer in the article saying he was receiving in kind gifts for covering the event.Comment

The reality is boxing isn't NFL, NBA or MLB. If promoter's have to pay journalists to get column inches then so be it. So some journalists have a conflict of interest? Easy answer don't read their articles!Nobody covering fights have tickets given to them. They get credentialed as media. That's standard practice across all sports. If a journalist is aligned with any network or promoter they ain't getting 'objective news' man. And in answer to your last reply to me, who do you think issues press credentials at a boxing events? You think dudes just rock up and say 'I'm a journo, let me in'? No. The event organsier - in this case Hearn decides who gets press credentials, same as Al or whoever will decide who gets credentials for PBC events... in short they can decide to let in who they want.Exactly but people don't seem to have a problem with it. Course, in the main they let in anyone who's fairly reputable and invite people from all the major outlets because not doing so would create bad feeling and probably bad press, but as with everything there's a bit of quid pro quo... You get invited to the events and there's a tacit agreement that whilst you don't have to sell your soul you also ain't likely to get invited to many more if you go in too hard on the event organiser. And of course with that goes a degree of hospitality... as a major league promoter a huge part of your job is courting the press. Course you want 'em to enjoy your events and feel positive towards you, but that doesn't mean you get to tell 'em what to write or some bullchit which is what you seem to be implying in the thread title.
So yeah. That's just the way it's done, the way the game's played... and fuck... Saudi Arabia? It makes prefect sense that if you want the most coverage you fly out the journos. How many are really gonna come otherwise? As long as they ain't rabidly against your promotion why wouldn't you?
I think maybe the issue here is that you genuinely see Hearn and DAZN as some kinda evil aberation and imagine that they're up to all kinds of nefarious ish, when in fact they're just doing exactly the same kind of stuff as everyone else has always done.Last edited by Citizen Koba; 11-23-2019, 05:00 PM.Comment
