1. Terence Crawford
Why: Looks light years above and beyond anyone else out there. Needs big fights to prove the doubters wrong.
2. Naoya Inoue
Why: Keeps proving himself again and again. Just came through his biggest test yet by walking through fire and finding the big body shot when it mattered.
3. Errol Spence, Jr.
Why: The guy who beat up the legendary Floyd in sparring just can’t be beat. Went toe to toe with an elite swarmer in Shawn Porter and found a way to outbox him and avoid any real damage. Time will tell if he will truly recover from his car accident.
4. Oleksandr Usyk
Why: Unified a dangerous cruiserweight division by beating some real dogs in their own backyards. Time will tell how good he is at heavyweight; expect him to rise or fall accordingly.
5. Vasyl Lomachenko
Why: A gutsy fighter who can outclass just about anybody when fighting at 130; in over his head at lightweight and still manages to outbox and outlast his much larger opponents. Time will tell if the damage he’s been taking will catch up to him soon.
6. Canelo Alvarez
Why: often overhyped and overrated, Canelo still is a great fighter whose ring generalship is second to none. Look for him to continue to win. He could rise on this list if he fights and defeats younger/better talent.
7. Jermall Charlo
Why: A powerful fighter who is unbeaten after 30 fights. Needs to fight and beat Canelo to rise into the top five.
8. Deontay Wilder
Why: The sheer quality of his punches often produce knockouts, inspire many young athletes to take up boxing. Expect his success to continue in spite of his poor technical ability due to an iron chin and great punching skill. May fall on my list if someone manages to weather his best or knock him out.
9. Callum Smith
Why: a very underrated fighter with dominance in both fists. I think he has the tools to be among the elite. He needs big fights to rise, but if he loses to big names he will fall accordingly.
10. Shawn Porter
Why: he’s shown he can bruise with the best of them. If he had managed to keep his feet against Errol Spence, he would have had a close win on my scorecard. Expect him to continue to be a real tough test for anyone who takes a fight with him.
