He came from kick boxing and maybe paranoid not realizing that Lennox was trying to help him.

Used to be a staple in boxing. When you KD'd a man you'd need to be careful to stand clear of his feet because as they went down they'd flail their legs about trying to kick but not be flagrant.

Kicking was already illegal but if you fell and happened to kick a man while falling by accident that was okay.

So basically everyone 'accidentally' kicked their opponent.

Nonpareil Dempsey suffered a four inch gash and kept fighting. They wore steel cleats back then too so when Johnny Reagan caught him with a well placed shin kick Dempsey was properly cut.
