Should merge this with the thread someone else created as it had a gofundme link setup if anyone is inclined to donate. He left three children behind.

Or I guess you edited that out as it's against policy or something? I can't even find it anymore. Oh well

You and me both brother. Boxing is an incredibly brutal yet beautiful sport. I have nothing but respect for those that step into the squared circle, whether it be for sparring, amateurs or the pros. You really never know how much of yourself you will be leaving in that ring, yet some are very quick to call others cowards or quitters.

RIP Cowboy. Never saw you fight but it sounds like you represented yourself well in and out of the ring.

Sounds like something preexisting that wasn't detected. But still. Zerafa must hit like a truck.

Well i’m not sure how it works, but if people are stronger, i’m not sure it means they can also take more punishment, maybe to a certain degree. At the end of the day, all humans are vulnerable and there’s only so much damage humans can take, some more than others but there has to be a limit. I wonder if one day soon, we reach a point where boxers strength far outweighs the amount of punishment we can take, then we have a problem.

Whether people like to admit it or not, boxers now are faster, stronger and more powerful than in the past. Every sport evolves, it’s just harder to measure in boxing because there’s no official measurement like in athletics or something where there’s a definitive time or measurement record, but we would be ignorant to think other sports athletes are better than the past and boxing isn’t.

We just don’t realise these things because we watch great fighters and fights from the past and they look great, but it’s all relative to the opposition too. Go watch Carl Lewis race in the 80’s and he looks like he’s absolutely flying. Drop him in a 100m race today at that speed and he would get left behind and nobody can dispute that because the facts are there.

Of course, give him all the same training and nutrition then it’d be different, but that’s the point isnt it. All today’s boxers have great nutrition and coaching to make them even stronger, but i think humans can only take so much punishment.

Well more people are boxing worldwide & the world population has doubled since the 1970s so there's that, the death rate may be even lower than it used to be based on the total population.

But athletes are bigger/stronger than ever and it's pushing the human body past it's limits, I see this a lot in the nba. Athletes have never taken better care of their bodies now but they're so explosive that their joints cannot handle it.

Overall the trend ain't upwards if you look over the last few decades, thankfully, but this year has been the worst - by far - we got solid records for in terms of fatalities. Let's pray it's just a tragic outlier.

RIP to all the warriors who lost their lives to the sport and heartfelt condolences to those touched by Dwight's departure. RIP Champ.
