It's actually pretty simple once you remember all of Canelo's past performances (in his prime I mean) instead of being prisoner of a recent seemingly fixed fight, if not fights... Vasyl Lomachenko beat Nicholas Walters and Gary Russell Jr easier, a lot easier in fact, than Canelo Alvarez beat Liam Smith.
That about sums it up.
Also, Oleksandr Usyk beat Murat Gassiev and Marco Huck easier than Canelo beat Liam Smith.
Canelo was in more trouble late vs Alfredo Angulo than Lomachenko was against everyone he's fought since GRJ, including the Linares fight where he got knocked down. Canelo was starting to wear down a bit late and feel the shots, Loma just got flash knocked down.
The way I see it from a talent standpoint, waist up, Canelo has improved so much, he is definitely in shouting range of what Lomachenko and Usyk do, waist up, but waist down, Lomachenko and Usyk add the elite footwork and that's the difference. Lomachenko and Usyk are basically Canelo but with a higher grade of footwork, punch output, and stamina. And in Usyk's case, his reach is a bit better for his size as well.
I think people get too caught up in names. Of course Canelo fights the most big names, he's the cash cow so he can get whatever fights he wants WHENEVER the time is best for him and worst for his opponent, while these other guys can't get most the opponents they want to fight. How long has Loma been trying to fight various guys, from Santa Cruz to Mikey to Tank, with no luck? If he was Canelo he would have gotten all those fights already.
So the trick is to throw that all out, and throw out paper belts, all the political bull****, and just ask yourself, who are the best boxers in the sport? If everyone was the same size, who would you rank above who? And the answer to that, when you really analyze it, in my opinion is that Lomachenko and Usyk are the two best prime boxers in the sport right now, all around. They have the elite strengths of a Canelo, Crawford, or Inoue, but with even less weaknesses. They might not hit as hard as Inoue, but they have their own elite strengths. Usyk's stamina at cruiserweight may be just as rare as Inoue's power at 118 is, for example.
Pacquiao, if he was younger, or even at this age, if he was fighting at 140, could also be argued as the best in the world even at this age. But since he's at 147, I don't think at 40 he has the stamina to say he would beat a 147 version of Usyk or Loma. As for Crawford, he is not as tank-like built like Canelo or Usyk, and his defense is not as good as Canelo's, Loma's, and Usyk's.
What do you guys think?
