After disposing of GGG, and whitewashing Kovalev, the talk in boxing circles centers around Canelo's next move.
The truth is, he can do whatever he wants, he is the best fighter in the world and the sports biggest box office draw at the same time, this gives him carte blanche in virtually every single area of his career.
Once he dumps Oscar, he will be making $100 million a fight.
But Canelo has a problem, there isn't anyone compelling to fight, not really.
GGG is washed up, a victory over him would mean nothing more than a couple extra bucks, a pure cash grab, legacy wise the fight is irrelevant at this point, as Canelo himself has stated.
Callum Smith has zero profile stateside, he is a fine champion, but 168 is a boxing graveyard, a unification would create little to zero buzz within the home of big time boxing, which America is, DAZN would not engender a subscription spike if they go this route.
BJ Saunders would be a problem in the ring for a couple rounds, but he has zero profile stateside, and an awful style, hard to look good against him even if you win, and his drug use, and general maturity issues, make him a liability, you can trust him to be an upstanding and clean athlete throughout the promotion.
Andrade has not fought anyone, he has been a big nothing for years now, and his profile is low, his style sucks, nice guy, has a belt, but there is little upside in fighting him.
Charlo meanwhile, is the WBC champion, has a huge presence in the urban and hip hop communities, has done good numbers given his opponents, and has the type of personality that could really help the fight crossover to the mainstream. If you factor in his brother, and the whole PBC crew rocking with him at press conferences/40 days etc, it truly would be a summit level meeting, DAZN and PBC going head to head for the all the marbles.
That's outside the ring.
Inside the ring, it's a darn good fight, Canelo is the more complete, accomplished fighter, and should be the favorite, but Charlo had the speed, the power, and the athletic ability to give Canelo the fight of his life, even stop him if Canelo walks to him like he walked to GGG and Kovalev.
This fight will cut across lines of culture, the Charlo's are massive in the hop hop community, and Canelo is a legend in Mexico in his prime.
It would have to be on DAZN, but if Oscar has the foresight to make it a joint PPV, and pay DAZN a fee, it would easily do 1.5 million buys, and Canelo could walk away with $80 million as oppose to $35 million.
It's the best fight out there, and a fight that would fire up the boxing community, while also appealing to the casual fans.
Make the fight.
