Mcgirt's gameplan : Have Kovalev fight like Lara against Canelo

They tried to outbox Canelo and keep him honest with his jab. Bad gameplan for Mcgirt and Kov. Strange he didnt decide to brawl kov has size and power advantage.

In retrospect... maybe Kov should have put a crap more mustard on his shots early to keep Canelo honest.

It was a great game plan. He kept it close which is impressive for an old man who can’t take a punch.

Myself and a most people commenting on the thread had Kovalev ahead. You really can't plan for Kov running out of energy and getting caught. It was a good gameplan. Couldn't have asked for more from Buddy, he even tried to keep his breathing even in between rounds. Kov looked OK through 10.. which hasn't really happened in several years. Canelo was a huge favorite, and he won.

True. Surprised by the judges scorecards though no way was Canelo leading that fight before the KO

Kovalev looked like he was having a sparring session. He let the smaller man walk him down as the fight went on. Instead of punching hard through the guard and using your power to make canelo respect him. After the fight he said he was tired after 5-6 rds. Only reason I’ll let the trainer slide for turning the krusher into a total B8tch. Kov needs to retire asap , he can’t go 5 rounds without being severely fatigued. And that’s without him even throwing any hard punches at all.

Watching some of the highlights back and reading the reports - it sounded to me like Canelo was very limited in punch output and was largely Kov winning on volume and a good jab. Nobody has so much as even dented Canelo in years, I think putting anything more on his punches might have seen Kov gas out. Of course nobody knows really!

They tried to copy Floyds game plan. But it didn't work. Kovalev can't roll and counter on the inside like Floyd can. He also doesn't slip shots on the inside like Floyd does. He had the right idea with sticking the jab and moving but that was all he really took from Floyd.

Agreed, McGirt trains fighters to lose. He strips them of any aggression they have, and makes them passive, and then gets ready to throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble.

Some of the shots got Canelo's attention, it was clear if he put something behind it, Canelos night would have been much rougher.

It was a bad game plan. Why take a guy with bad stamina, and build a game plan around waiting it out till the late rounds, while not using your weight or any other tricks to sap Canelo's strength?
