Comments Thread For: Andre Ward: Bulking Up For Kovalev Wrong Thing For Canelo

RENO, Nevada The first fighter to beat Sergey Kovalev thinks Canelo Alvarez has gone about moving up to the light heavyweight division the wrong way. Andre Ward, who moved up from super middleweight three bouts before boxing Kovalev in November 2016, suspects Alvarez might've added too much muscle mass for his light heavyweight debut. The 5-feet-8 Alvarez weighed in at a career-high 174 pounds Friday for his 12-round, 175-pound showdown with Kovalev on Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena (DAZN).

I agree... canelo looked energy depleted by the 6th round on most fights....and would deplete throughout the later rounds.

Ward got a gift decision vs Kovalev in the first fight. It rubs me the wrong way that this piece doesn’t at least say it was controversial. As for canelo, I really doubt they’re dumb and thought he needed to bulk up and feel his speed decreasing. Essentially he’s on fight night weight and just didn’t have to cut

Boxing Scene’s chosen pic of Canelo looks good. What is a Middleweight on the 175 scale supposed to look like? I don’t get it. If Gennady, Andrade, or Charlo were on the 175 scale what else are they supposed to look like other than being bigger than a 160 scale?

Do we need to be remind what 15lbs of water or muscle combination would look like? I said weeks ago that Canelo wouldn’t need to drain for the scale and in the previous months Canelo just looks like normal Canelo. He himself said he wouldn’t need to drain. Though it does look Canelo added 5lbs muscle tops. I think he’ll be 177 or 178 tonight

Though to Ward’s credit, I know the interview from which he said this. I think it’s from Fight Hype and a week old. He said the problem he had himself was that he bulked up for Kova and that he should’ve just “been himself.” However in the second fight imo he looked more soft and filled and thicker neck.. so I don’t know what Ward is on about. I honestly give Ward benefit of doubt he’s merely talking about his performance rather than make it seem he’s criticizing Canelo or giving advice.

Dre, you're smart and you know boxing and all that, but when you go around saying, "he looks real wide. He was already a thick dude, now he looks real wide and thick", you gotta be real careful. You might be perceived like you was sizing canelo up on some other doo doo

If Canelo gasses faster than usual this could get ugly.
