  • Comments Thread For: Teddy Atlas Details Why Canelo is Heavy Favorite Over Kovalev

By Mitch Abramson - Teddy Atlas was known as a commentator who rarely held back when he was animating and berating the airwaves in 21 years at ESPN boxing. So, it was a bit startling to hear Atlas say that he finally felt liberated, free of any checks and balances, in his new role as a podcast host on "The Fight, with Teddy Atlas." Fresh from taping his...

I cant listen to this crappy podcast anymore... The cohost is a total moron, they're always pushing some ****** product or bookie site while acting like the'yre doing this for the love of it... Half the time is Teddy expanding on a ten example analogy or metaphor, and almost every prediction Teddy makes is wrong so take that with a pound of salt.

Teddy pretty much puts a bow on it. Sums up everything I've felt about this fight.

There is a weight restriction. Kovalev can't be heavier than 185 pounds on the day of the fight.

Other than the strange thought that Canelo will be somehow be stronger at 175, I do not have a problem with his outlook. Kovalev getting a decision without putting Alvarez down on the canvas a few times is very unlikely. Also, Kovalev's short turnaround at his age is a serious point of concern. This is not Andy Ruiz, in the prime of his career off a dominating win over a club level fighter getting the shot of a lifetime on a short training cycle against Anthony Joshua. Kovalev went tooth and nail with Yarde, and his chicken is aged well past spring. Alvarez is WAY fresher with much younger legs. It is why my Kovalev pick to win is 100% contingent on a fast start at his natural weight against Alvarez. If he is at all sluggish, Alvarez will be able to store up early rounds and use movement to pick up a clear decision win.

Pretty disappointed with Atlas on his latest work with Gvozdyk. I thought the Nail could have fought a much different and more competitive fight.

“He’s shown some erosion as a fighter, I think there’s no doubt about it.....''

                Huh (the bold) ?!?!?!

                Definitely maybe ????

                  1. Canelo does not have the power to KO Kovalev.
                  2. Kovalev is the stronger fighter here, not Canelo.
                  3. If Yarde who punches much, much harder than Canelo couldn't finish the job, then Canelo certainly cant, barring some BS stoppage.
                  4. The world will be pissed if Kovalev outboxes Canelo like GGG did and gets robbed like GGG and so many others did.

Even realizing the betting favorite is Canelo, I still give Kovalev a solid chance here. Killer body shots are going to give Canelo fits... as is the level of difficulty he'll have getting inside without taking too many shots. But Atlas is right, Sergey isn't getting a decision win, no matter what happens. His only saving grace will be a stoppage win.

I will be very surprised if this isn't an action packed fight, no matter how it ends up.
