Has Canelo Alvarez ever fought a mandatory challenger?

No. Canelo was suspended for the clenbuterol shenanigans at the time
GGG wanted a stay busy fight while waiting for his Canelo payday, he could have fought his mandatory Derev, but he chose a SMW Vanes coming off retirement and a loss, a he was stripped off the IBF belt as a result
GGG ducked his mandatory, but in retrospective and after seeing GGG beaten from pillar to post by Derev recently, he made the right decission, financially wise. He could have lost that Canelo paydayComment

Golovkin wasn't stripped until after he fought Vanes, man. The IBF gave him a pass to fight Vanes but then said he had to fight Derevyanchenko next. He elected to fight Canelo instead.No. Canelo was suspended for the clenbuterol shenanigans at the time

He knew he had to fight Derev before signing to fight Vanes. Derev was available and willing to fight, GGG could have fulfilled his mandatory obligation right there but he wanted a cakewalk fight, so he fought Vanes insteadComment

Why did Canelo ignore his mandatory against GGG to fight Liam Smith?
GGG was available and ready to fight, Canelo could have fulfilled his mandatory obligation right there but he wanted a cake walk fight. So he fought Smith instead.

When your opponent pisses dirty 1 month or so before your fight...and an org tries to enforce a mandatory instead of giving you a stay busy fight before the original fight happens, I mean how can anyone be mad at GGG for that situation lolComment

No doubt. He could have done and IMO he should have done even if realistically it would have meant pushing back the Canelo fight, but as I recall it he was in the process of negotiating for an opponent when the IBF dropped that ish on him (even though he was still technically in rotation for the WBC and mandated to fight their challenger). I guess it boils down to whether you would accept it as reasonable to want longer than 3 weeks preparation for a fighter of Derevyanchenko's calibre or not. I'm typically forgiving of fighters who take soft touches for short notice replacements but if you ain't then that's fair enough.
So yeah, he could have done, but ultimately after the Vanes fight the choice still had to be made and he chose to fight Canelo instead of Derevyanchenko.Comment
