Comments Thread For: Canelo: We Picked Kovalev Because He's The Best at 175

Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) is looking to make fireworks when he steps in the ring with Sergey "Krusher" Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KOs), as they collide for the Russian boxer's WBO light heavyweight title. Canelo takes the big risk in moving up in weight, as he climbs up by two entire divisions to challenge Kovalev.

Kova best at 175 lbs ?!

          Of course it's not true!
But it's nice to see respect from both parties.

That’s not a very stacked division, and Kovalev isn’t the best. Who knows if he can even beat Gvozdyk or Bivol, let alone Beterbiev. I do like Kovalev’s chances against Bivol though. But no one would have a problem if Canelo said Kovalev is the most accomplished, the most tested, the most well known LHW, and the fighter that would generate the most interest by fans to watch/sub to DAZN. Yes, Beterbiev and maybe Gvozdyk, would be greater challenges to Canelo, but that doesn’t make Kovalev an easy fight just because there are better fighters Canelo can fight at 175. I think Kovalev is the 3rd best there but I understand Gvozdyk’s loss brings him up to #2 by default but I think Gvozdyk is still better.

At this point it’s between beterbiev and kovalev so if kov ain’t the best he’s second so that’s not really a reach.

nah Kovalev was chosen because he's nearing the end of his career and looking for a cash out.

More specifically, Kovalev is the best on the “past their primes” column at 175, which is the only column fighters at the very top pick their opponents from.
