I miss what HBO used to be. Mainly the 90s to early 2000s. You'd get great fights consistently with guys on their roster like chave, Barrera, morales, Oscar, tito, Cotto, bowe, holyfield, etc. The last 5 yrs or so were lame and not worth watching more often than not.
its easy to wax nostalgic and think of older times, about how much better the fights were, etc., but HBO back in the day probably showed as many Hopkins-Hakkar type fights as they did Barerra-Mckinney type fights. DAZN, Fox, etc lack the production and presentation of HBO, but the fights probably arent all that much different.
What I miss the most are the days before network-fighter contracts, when networks simply bought the fights they wanted, skipped the ones they didnt, and gave more honest commentary. These days you have networks ignoring other champions because they fight on other platforms, and providing fight commentary that paints "their guy" in the best light.....
I think HBO boxing began to fall off when they ousted Foreman. Foreman and Merchant were classic together and Jim did fine during those years. Jim has gotten older and just not as sharp through the later 00’s and 10’s. Mayweather and Pacquaio carried HBO. To me, Kellerman was awful and Roy was somewhat OK but not great. Merchant also got old people got tired of him.
HBO has and never needed the sport of boxing to survive. HBO is killing it with its original programming and has been since forever. boxing is missing the production value HBO brought to the game!!! jim lampley is the best play by play guy in the sport.
