If anyone is wondering why the WBC is so offended by this, it has nothing to protecting amateur boxing or any of that BS.

They’re worried that Olympic medals will become bigger than world boxing titles in the future and that pros will become more concerned with competing to make Olympic teams and win medals than winning their titles.

It’s a power struggle and the wbc is worried that they’ll lose their significance and sanctioning fees.

Most countries that compete (except the USA) pay their amateurs anyway, Mexico included.

Is that true? I heard of a Mexican fighting middleweight working to pay fund himself during the Olympics. I forgot his name

This dudes so full of sh.t. If Canelo woke up tomorrow and said he was going to the Olympics, he'd change his tune real F'n quick. Funny thing is, Canelo has played the WBC out b4 but they run back to him like a battered wife. Lol

It's true. Once they are on the national team they get paid monthly.

I do kind of disagree with the principle of pro boxers in the olympics because I think the event has its best value as a springboard for the top amateur boxers who might wish to go pro (just think of all the great fighters over the years who kickstarted their amazing careers off of an olympic gold medal) but I don't buy the line of there being an "abysmal difference" between pros and amateurs. There sure as hell wasn't one in Rio. The WBC does have a right to take a stance against this if it wants, but I think it's being way too heavy-handed by blacklisting fighters who want to compete, it doesn't need to throw its weight around like that. How about it uses some of that influence to enforce some of its long-overdue mandatories instead?

US amateurs get paid too. In the reddit AMA the other day Keyshawn Davis said he is the highest paid amateur on Team USA.

"I'm actually the highest paid amateur on the US team right now. Amateurs get paid."
