Comments Thread For: Making The Sport Safer: Standing 8 Counts and Early Stoppages

As dumb as it sounds, smaller gloves will make the sport safer. Bigger and more padded gloves allow fighters to take more of a beating. And the 49 lb weight dehydration these fighters do isn’t helping. Truthfully, the statement of making boxing safer is an oxymoron. It a sport fighters get punched in the face for 30+ minutesComment

Early stoppages and standing eight counts are subjective and can always be called favoritism or corruption. On this forum there are many who claimed that Deontay Wilder was given extra time to recover against Ortiz while Joshua was not afforded a similar "favor" against Ruiz. I prefer two minute rounds with 45 seconds between rounds. This change may actually produce more excitement. It may seem radical but most meaningful changes are.Comment

The problem is that many fighters and their fans specially Black fighters, always crie about the fight being stopped too early and making excuses for the loss....take for instance Benavidez vs Dirrel where the latter was beaten to a pulp and after they stopped the fight and was obvious he was on his way to the cemetery he says " I COULD HAVE KEPT GOING " So did his fans. Mexicans prefer to die and not hug while being battered ....Comment

People gonna die..... Do yall really want the sport to become the NFL/NBA?
I think dehydration from cutting weight, unknown damage in sparring b4 fights are worst.
Early stoppages?? So refs have excuses to stop fights when the fav. Fighter is losing.
I don't want any new rules that can be corrupted.
I hate to say it or sound harsh, if dudes and their family can't take the risks stay in the AMs or dont fight. At the end of the day the nature of the sport is dangerous. You train to inflict damage until that is changed deaths will always happen. My 2centsComment

Are these idiots serious about stopping the action when a fighter gets hurt so that he can survive and take a more prolonged beating? Standing 8 counts isn’t helping anyone.Comment

May sound harsh. I wouldn’t change anything.
Heard Bob and Max Kellerman want DAY OF WEIGH INs and not day before.
Just get the doctors more involved in the corners if anything and authorize them to stop fights
But I wouldn’t change anythingComment

Hour Before the Fight
The sport is inherently dangerous. Not sure if a S8C makes it safer but it would most definitely expose another loophole for corruption.
What is also certain is that extreme dehydration to make weight increases the chance of sustaining brain trauma. So implement a same-HOUR weigh-in along with a check (by a physician) for fluid levels immediately after an athlete steps off the scale. A low serum level disqualifies the fighter.
Greedy promoters, state commissions, and sanctioning bodies (and admittedly some boxers) will not be endorsing anything that poses greater risk of an event being botched. This means federal lawmakers will need to step up to protect the athletes.
A byproduct of implementing this would be the abolishment of catch weight fights. A boxer who wants to build a "legacy" against bigger opponents will need to at least fight their cherry picks without draining them first.Comment
