  • Comments Thread For: Joshua-Ruiz Saga is Just Part of The Heavyweight Resurgence

It's been a while since we used to eagerly anticipate heavyweight championship bouts. Although long-time unified champion, Wladimir Klitschko was revered during his decade of dominance, his title defences weren't always enjoyable to witness as he knocked out overwhelmed victim after overwhelmed victim. They waited like death row inmates almost accepting of the inevitable defeat that lay ahead

Why do people still pretend it was so gobsmacking an upset? Joshua was never THAT good and Ruíz was known to be skilled

Ahh you are talking about Boxing fans. We only make up a small number of people interested in the big fights. The vast majority are casuals who didnt know who Ruiz was let alone how good he is and they dont care enough to go check him out. They just take hype as factual cuz they only read the headlines. Joshua is an unstoppable monster and they were all already looking over Ruiz shoulder to what lay next.

But even to us it was a bit of an upset, we are minded enough to realize styles make fights, 1 punch can change or end a fight and that Joshua is not overly comfortable with the shorter heavies. I thought Joshua would win but you cant rule anybody out and i knew Ruiz would be dangerous.

Yeah, I complain about people repeating the same nonsense but then I’m repeating my same surprise when really I shouldn’t expect much from the casual fan base.
You’re right. An upset, yes, but not unfathomable. That’s the way I saw and see it.

Jughead Joyce won't be challenging anyone for a meaningful strap. He's just not that good.

That DDD kid will, cos he is.

When you take a look at other fighters choices for late replacements, I still say Joshua does not get enough credit for choosing a man who was a legit threat. Yes, Ruiz was a fighter who Joshua was favored to beat, but Ruiz was a serious HW who was one debated decision away from being the guy Joshua would have had to unify with. Joshua and his team knew he was dangerous. Considering Joshua would have been given a pass if he went out and got a club fighter considering the circumstances it kills me that Joshua haters do not see that as respect worthy. Consider that Joshua offered the fight to King Kong Ortiz first, which would have even been seen as MORE dangerous than Ruiz at the time.

As far as the fight itself, I remember MOST of the posters on here gave Ruiz his due. Very few gave him a chance to win, but almost all the comments after he was announced said he was a legit HW and a legit fight, the next best thing to an Ortiz match. I had never seen one of his fights all the way through (highlights of the Parker fight was it for me), and even I knew about his quick hands and basically undefeated record save that razor thin decision. I had Joshua as a late round TKO prediction, but I knew this was a good fighter. It was all the other media outlets that lost their ever living mind over that win.

                    Yep.
Cherry picking the fattest shortest boxer Eddie could find backfired spectacularly.

                    Made the victory much sweeter.
