Comments Thread For: Canelo: DAZN Didn't Pressure Me To Take Golovkin Fight

Canelo Alvarez obviously realizes DAZN's executives want nothing more than for him to fight Gennadiy Golovkin a third time. Streaming their third fight to attract subscribers was one of the main motivations for signing Alvarez and Golovkin to nine-figure contracts once HBO stopped broadcasting boxing. Alvarez said during a conference call Thursday, though, that he didn't feel pressure from DAZN executive chairman John Skipper or anyone else affiliated with that streaming service to agree to box Golovkin again once the Mexican icon made it clear that high-profile fight doesn't interest him.

DAZN will learn from this. Regardless if they assumed everyone involved would make a great buck - including GGG himself whom was reaching for the Canelo fight once signed to DAZN - that Canelo wasn’t interested in anyone else’s plan for the sacrificial lamb to get his pay.

Most guys would follow Canelo’s lead.

Could have fooled me. Initially they would only sign off on a Kovalev or Golovkin fight. I think that's sending a message. If the field is narrowed down to only two fighters I'd say he's being pressured to fight either man. Golovkin is one of those guys. Canelo is spinning this which is not unusaual. Most fighters would do the same to save face.

Dazn clearly can narrow down his selection of opponents but probably can't pick the exact opponent. They definitely expected canelo to be more willing to face ggg but underestimated his diva and emotional tendencies. However, after seeing how old ggg looked last week, I'd actually be disappointed if Canelo all of a sudden changes his mind and decides to face an even older ggg. By the time they fight, it will have been about 2 yrs since their last fight and will look as if Canelo was just waiting to age him.... Again.

I'm sure that was the main goal of the deal. Otherwise, they would have offered him a smaller contract. The amount the spent on him is bananas

Alvarez needs to talk to somebody outside of GBP. He keeps spewing this "he's no challenge for me" and "I beat him clearly" around at every opportunity when the whole world knows it's not true, after 2 extremely close fights. He sounds like he's ducking and doesn't even realize it.

GGG needs to move on with his boxing life.

If their path cross again so be it but enough already.

I saw enough in their last fight and in GGG's fight against Devy that he will never beat Canelo.

                Move on.

From a business perspective, it makes sense for DAZN not to push for the 3rd fight until later down the road once they evaluate if they are hitting their American subscription goals.

I would say September 2020 is most likely when they push for the fight but if American numbers are well short of goal (not saying they are) they probably push for May 2020.

Keith Idec has been the same one repeating more than anyone the narrative that Dazn wants & wanted Ggg to face Canelo at any cost & that Canelo had to fight Dazn tooth & nail not to be forced to.

This same false narrative claims that the reason Dazn is so desperate to make the trilogy is because they signed ggg to a lucrative deal hes not worth without a 3rd Canelo fight & that without that fight it's somehow screwing over Dazn.

Well that is provably nothing but a fallacy clearly based on 1 ggg fan reporters personal interest in ggg getting another Canelo fight.(its obvious Idec is a ggg fan much more than nelo)The reason I can prove this for a fact is because that narrative not only makes zero sense, but it's also completely dependant on such lame examples of supposed proof as "Dazns executive said that's a fight he wants to make",

well Dazns skipper also said that when a fighter like Canelo jumps 2 divisions to face #1 like kovalev that its a fight that sells itself,& that thats exactly why he signed Canelo & doesn't need to convince him of anything as he already does whats best for business anyways without ggg because" he tries making history."
