Comments Thread For: Hearn: Usyk Likely To Fight For Vacant WBO Heavyweight Title

NEW YORK Eddie Hearn doesn't envision Oleksandr Usyk having to go through the Andy Ruiz Jr.-Anthony Joshua winner to capture a heavyweight title. Hearn, whose company promotes Joshua and Usyk, instead anticipates Usyk fighting for the vacant WBO title at some point in 2020. Usyk, who'll face huge underdog Chazz Witherspoon on Saturday night in Chicago, is the WBO's mandatory challenger for the victor of the immediate rematch between Ruiz (33-1, 22 KOs) and Joshua (22-1, 21 KOs).

The only thing we need to have an opinion on Usyk's HW career is to see if he can handle HW punches. Everything else he already has

If AJ wins Hearn is going to make him vacate the WBO to avoid fighting Usyk

Hearn is saying this because he knows if Joshua wins, they’ll face Pulev over Usyk.

        Why?

Because Usyk winning the WBO will keep the title under the same promotional banner and make it easier to recapture.

If they allow the IBF to go, it’ll become a Top Rank vs. PBC match up for that title. That would mean allowing Fury or Wilder to get first crack at the IBF and Hearn hasn’t been able to come to terms with those two.

Usyk can not handle AJs punches, or Wilder's for that matter. I am really curious to see Usyk against these guys at heavy.

Great example of how Hearn purposely misleads fans. Federal courts have banned stripping a champion for fighting one mandatory over another. There is a rotation system. Hearn knows this. Hearn knows many fans don't know this. So he plants the seeds now so he can cry later that Usyk was "screwed" when he doesn't get to fight for the vacant title.

What happens if Usyk gets upset by Chazz, does he still remain the WBO mandatory?

Only applies to a unification. Neither Ruiz or Wilder have unified the division.
