Comments Thread For: DiBella: GGG-Derevyanchenko Decision Wasn't A Robbery

NEW YORK Sergiy Derevyanchenko's handlers stopped short Saturday night of calling their fighter's loss to Gennadiy Golovkin "a robbery." Promoter Lou DiBella and manager Keith Connolly instead emphasized Derevyanchenko deserved to defeat Golovkin in their 12-round middleweight title fight at Madison Square Garden. An extremely determined Derevyanchenko gave Golovkin perhaps the most difficult fight of his 13-year pro career, but he lost a unanimous decision that left Derevyanchenko's representatives requesting a rematch.

I don't like to rewatch fights with a view to rescoring. Watching live I thought the judges were gonna call a draw, even with the knockdown, or that Derev had just shaded it. But the decision to Golovkin was not a "robbery".

When the heavily favored fighter does not dominate, the audience tends to give the underdog too much credit that if the fight is close, you have to give it to the underdog. I hate that mentality!

if two of those guys fight, it would be for the right to demand Canelo

and the winner would probably get him

Golovkin needs to run it back with Derevy, make a legitimate defence

I couldn't agree more. Just because ggg went the distance with Canelo in the first fight they called it a draw. Some people started crying robbery. But Canelo clearly won the fight. The most you could have given ggg was a draw and he got it.

2nd fight was completely different. Even Abel Sanchez said they lost the fight minutes after the 2nd fight was over. He even made things clear by saying "it wasn't a robbery" and "we're not going to make excuses"

I can't find 7 rounds for Golovkin, so two of the judges I think were wrong.

I scored 6 for Golovkin, and with the knockdown that's 114-113 GGG. But if it had gone 7 rounds to 5 for Derevyanchenko, I wouldn't have argued either.

                  114-113 fight either way.

                    Dibella is right

That was well spoken by Dibella. I like the way he gave Ggg his props. He definitely had his moments. But G knows he lost. You could see him almost apologizing to Dev after the scores were read. G went long stretches without throwing a punch because Devs return fire was stronger. That was a fine & gutsy performance by Dev.

But no matter the judges verdict, most fans and media believe Dev won. If G can't get the trilogy w Canelo he should rematch Dev. That is the right thing to do. But it's doubtful G wants anymore of that smoke. And I'm a fan of his.
