Comments Thread For: Ken Porter, Derrick James Get Into Heated Argument

LOS ANGELES The tension between Errol Spence Jr. and Shawn Porter was apparent Wednesday during the final press conference to promote their welterweight title unification fight. That friction was even more evident Thursday, when their trainers got into a heated argument that started inside the media center at the Intercontinental Los Angeles Downtown hotel. Ken Porter, Shawn's father and head trainer, confronted Derrick James, Spence's trainer, for comments James made Wednesday about Ken Porter's professional partnership with his son.

Crazy but true, his pops has this nutty commanding officer cult fiction persona, with his main criteria pushing on physically outlasting an opponent; like there aint no way an elite opponent can possibly match his sons output(?) Hence, the lack of technique and the wild fighting at times.

To Ken: Isnt there more to it?... Kens proven he's not all that as a technical trainer, but acts like he's been training superstars since the 1950s. Shaun needs a more solid boxing 101 class from a somebody that knows he's already motivated to be the best...and his pops should be the 1st to admit it,... Wow, talk about living like a sergeant vicariously thru your kid

Shawn is the fighter he is due to the guidance of his father. To say his dad doesn’t have a job is silly. He’s a boxing trainer, and more specifically head trainer to two time welterweight champion Shawn Porter. Does Freddie Roach not have a job ? Manny Robles? Kevin Cunningham ? Just cause Shawn is his son doesn’t make the job he’s done guiding him to TWO championships any less relevant.

And that’s saying a lot because when I saw Shawn get a draw w Julio Diaz I was certain he’d never win a championship of any kind. Shouts out to them. IMO they’ve already overachieved.

Shawn and is his Dad are a good team. They come across as friends. I never get the feeling Shawn wants his Dad out of the limelight. Just as I don't see that with Danny and Angel. I'm not a big fan of Shawn's style but it gets the job done. If he's so mediocre than why did he beat Danny, Berto, arguably Thurman and Broner? All guys who were equipped to pick him apart and they didn't slow him down.

Lol. He's clearly using his personal relationship with his kid to take advantage of his business relationship. The dude is in his 30's already & he's still trying to control him like he's 10. A real dad knows when to let his son control his own business. He's scared to lose his meal ticket bc without Shawn, he ain't got a job. He isn't a good trainer at all. It's pretty bad when AB calls you out & people agree with him. DJ just reiterated it.

I like Derrick James and I respect his opinion. But in my personal opinion, he crossed the line by making those statements to the media. The Porters understand their relationship and it has made them successful, period! Kenny knows his son inside and out and has his best interest at hand. He has put him in a great financial situation, has helped him have a successful amateur career, and has helped him become a 2 time world champion. And if you listen to Shawn, he wouldn’t have it any different. Kenny gets the best out of Shawn, so that’s all that matters. I don’t blame Kenny for stepping to him. Stay out of a father and son’s relationship.

But didn’t Shawn beat the **** out of AB??? Maybe Broner’s career would have been more successful if he had a disciplinary style trainer in his corner.
