Its unfortunate he retired. He should have fought Stevenson and stayed in the game setting up matches with the likes of Bivol, Beterbiev, and Gvodyk. He could of done so much more for the sport and while he was not an all action fighter he could properly break a opponent down, disturb their rhythmn, and fight dirty if he needed. People complain all the time when a great technical fighter doesn't have any dog in them but Ward did.
If Andre Ward never retired, would he still be P4P #1 today?

Honestly imo if Ward was from another country or if he fought all of his fights in a neutral setting...he would have about 5 Ls/DQs on his resume at this point...I don't think he was a very high level boxer...but he was very tough and smart in the ring, and if allowed to get away with the dirty tactics he could make it a tough fight..but even then I felt he failed to usually separate from most of his decent opponents.
Imo he wouldn't be rated very highly without the hometown officiating and judging...he would have had to significantly adapt his game to compete at the top level in a neutral setting...and I just think we would have seen shades of that from him in his career if he was able to do it...many on here probably did not watch a ton of his fights...but if interested try giving his fights with Bika and even Barrera a look, and turn the sound off and try and score them objectively, without knowing who either guy is...I just never really saw elite level skills in there from Andre, like I have with quite a few others in this era.
But he was definitely tough in there, I have to give him that...no way you can employ his style for as long as he did and not be tough, and smart.Comment
