hey there, i'm 17 years old 6 feet and 160 lbs and i'm very interested in boxing. i have no previous experience in fighting (Aside from the martial arts i took when i was 10 till 12 y/o). i'm in somewhat good shape since i played high school football. i live in northern ******ia (ashburn in loudoun county) and i was wondering how i get started? how do the professionals get started? i'm down for all the training that comes with the job and once i get started on something i become obsessive...so if someone could point me in the right direction that would be great! thanks
Can you find a boxing gym? Do your best to find one. Ask people from this website who are familiar with ******ia.
Things you need to buy: mouthpiece, jump rope, heavybag, Everlast gel handwraps, 16 OZ gloves (Everlast will probably be the best you can find). Also search for the Title Boxing catalog online; it's a good one with instructional tapes and gear you can buy.
Roadwork: This is something you cannot neglect. Run 2-4 miles every other day, and not all at a job. Sometimes, pick up the speed in between the jogging. Boxing matches are not fought every round at just a jogging pace after all. If you want some additional advice on roadwork, pm me.
Jump that rope for 3 minutes on, with one minute of rest. Do all of your training like this. The routine I usually do is 4 rounds jump rope, 4 rounds of shadowboxing, 2 rounds of heavybag, then 2 round of speedbag. You can also do rounds of footwork drills, where you just move laterally as if you were circling the perimeter of the boxing ring. Change directions very often during this drill to build up the legs.
Always wear a mouthpiece during training to get used to it.
aba club? american boxing association? i called them but the person i called wasn't very helpful...they said that they were located in norfolk va which is 3 and a half hours away from ashburn va...
