    Mayweather- Spink or Mayweather- Baldomir?

This is not a thread for us to talk about how badly we want to see Floyd fight Mosley...or De la Hoya, nor is it a thread about Mayweather ducking Margarito. This is a thread to discuss what, at this point, seem to be the two most likely opponents for Mayweather. Cory Spinks and Carlos Baldomir.

Baldomir is the new man at 147. Forget Margarito, or Cotto, or even Hatton- from a pure accomplishment perspective Baldomir is the linear Welterweight champion. He beat Zab Judah, and regardless of the reasons why, did so more spectacularly than Mayweather himself (I agree, that is debatable). Then he beat Gatti and, to be honest, in a way fans may have preferred to one-sided drumming Mayweather gave Arturo, too. Though some of these opinions are not my own, the fact is the arguement can be made that, based on his championship and the common opponents of Judah and Gatti, and his good showing against them, that Carlos Baldomir is a very legitamate opponent for Mayweather. Maybe the best choice to solidfy Floyd's status at 147.

Spinks would not prove anything about Floyd at 147. Rather, those who want to see a Spinks fight want to see what Floyd can do at 154. Reduced speed. Bigger men. Can Spinks represent a good first step into 154? Maybe even a stepping stone to acclimate himself to the weight for a fight with Oscar. As far as common opponents go, Mayweather and Spinks both fought Judah, but this time, unlike Baldomir, in his first fight Spinks won a close desicion- but in the second fight was stopped by Zab. Too big of a skill difference, or will the weight make up for it?

Neither man is up to Floyd's skill level, but with the title of pound for pound best...no one should be, right? Yes, both these men have serious flaws but for whatever reasons, it would seem these are the two most plausible candidates for his next fight. So, which of these fights would you most like to see, and why? Is there any merit to either as some think? Is Baldomir to big for Floyd? Is 154 where the dream ends? Would you pay to see either of these? Forget about Margarito, or anyone else, how do these two possible opponents stand up on their own in your eyes?

i say fight Baldi...(i wish he'd fight Tony but i know thats not what this thread is about) id rather see him do something significant at 147 before moving to another class just to get a belt

I hear that. Despite where you stand about Mayweather you have to agree he hasn't proven himself to us at 147. Baldomir would show us something at the weight...despite what people think of the skill difference. Linear champ is linear champ. Right? I see what you're saying Charlie.

Mayweather has lost a lot of respect in the boxing community, no matter who his next fight is. I personally don't really care either way who he fights at this point, since he's now ducked Margarito, any fight is a letdown.

I guess Baldomir is the one that makes the most sense, except how are they going to make that fight happen? Baldomir "priced himself out" before the Judah fight (according to Floyd, of course), so I'm sure Baldy's going to up his price even more after destroying Gatti. Don't see how the numbers work for that fight. And I don't think anyone really wants to see Spinks-Mayweather. That would be simply a case of Mayweather running out his division because he spied an easy title to take. Taking easier fights is not what fans want to see and they quickly lose respect for fighters making those types of moves.

I agree. Mayweather is going to lose a lot of that respect if he takes less money to fight Baldomir or Spinks though. 8 million dollars should never be turned down for such an easy opponent.

I think the Baldomir split could be worked out. If Mayweather wants to fight him, I think we can agree that Baldomir has earned higher paydays by beating Gatti and Judah, despite his level of skill. Those two names alone are bigger than anyone Maragrito has faced, though, so he would probably still deserve more cash than Antonio.

                Hatton

As far as Hatton goes...he also needs to show us something at 147. His performance against Collazo, who is not a big puncher, really demonstrated his inability to impress at the higher weight. At this point, both Baldomir and Spinks are better opponents for Mayweather, in my eyes, unless he was to move down in weight...which is a step away from De la Hoya.

                Spinks or Baldy?

I think Mayweather will fight Bald next simply becuz he is the champ at 147 and has beaten basically the same opponents he has in somehwat the same fashion, and this fight being for the Welterweight Title and all is also very lucritive for Mayweather despit the critics. I think he looks at it as he knows he'll be around in 2-3 more years or fights and if he can snatch the belt from Bald in say in Nov or Dec (IF BALD is ready) then fight ODLH sometime in early-to-mid 07, and then if Margarito (hopeful he doesnt fight Williams before a PBF fight), Mosley, Hatton, Cotto (if he does something admirable),Williams or anyother up-incomer is still around he can fight them, and thats what i think PBF is thinking!

He will beta all though, and hopefully before battling with say a Mosley or Williams move to 154

Like I said, Hatton- the brawler from over the pond- did not look good during his first outing at 147. Despite what anyone says, I saw with my own eyes, a slick boxer give him trouble. Mayweather is the very definition of slick, so I think Hatton would be in huge trouble. Unless he shows me something better at the weight, with a decent name, you can keep Hatton out of all future plans for Floyd in my book.

At this point, I'd rather see Mayweather fight Baldomir than Hatton.
