Let's just call it how it is: Canelo is only fighting Kovalev because he is old

My mexican sources say CW at 172 and rehydration clause, Kova is getting paid High and getting K.O Fast.

Don’t know if the reason canelo is targeting kovalev is age specifically. I think it has more to do with kovalev’s lack of durability, to the body especially, and the stamina issues that he’s shown. The fact that he’s been stopped a couple times also factors in no doubt. Canelo will be liking his chances even more after seeing kovalev hurt to the body and head.

it's not just cause he's old he's also vulnerable to the body and tires around the middle rounds if you keep hitting him there that's canelos bread and butter they know they can beat him but kovalev will always have that punching power it's a good fight but i do expect canelo to win this one.

Pac was guilty of this, so was Floyd and Roy Jones and down the line.

I don't like the fight for that reason. I think it's dumb.

Would any of you guys seriously think Canelo would try to fight a 30 year old Kovalev? The one that was destroying Pascal and dropping Ward? Hell no...

And if you do think that...why isn't he mentioning any of the other active but younger champions at light Heavyweight like Bivol? Bivol is at DAZN as well so that fight would be easier to make. It's because Kovalev is old now, that's why...

EDIT- this is not a Canelo hate thread! You don't have to defend him in the comments like he is your bf (he won't date you!) I think we are all in agreement that he is fighting Kovalev for this reason.... because I haven't seen anyone deny that.
Spot on its a belt grab from a recognizable name thats showed signs of being past it.

Lara was soundly beaten in the majority of rds of that fight(a fight is scored rd by rd & he lost easily 9 rds),just because he didn't lose every rd by double the total punches landed, doesn't mean he didn't lose that fight from beginning to end almost for the simple fact Everytime nelo hit him with the body shot combos down then upstairs lara almost fell on a few occasions from running so scared the entire fight & stunk up the joint so badly hbo dropped his boring pssy ass. & lara was getting hurt everytime while he barely landed cleanly the entire fight & landed nothing but arm punch jabs that were blocked or countered 90% of the time. Anyone who thinks Lara deserved more than 4 rds being generous af has never learned Boxin

I think even with Kov's age there's a really good chance he could spark Canelo out on fight night provided he doesn't get drained to 170 or something crazy.
I never saw Kovalev as being as great as a lot of people did. Still I loved his jab against Yarde. They commented on how stiff it is and could knock someone out with it, and he did. His physique is unassuming. Kovalev looked one punch from being stopped but he survived and pressed. I like his experience now. I hope there’s no weight stipulations though I feel there will be. I don’t think Kovalev is on Canelos level skill wise, but I hope he’s a real tough fight.

canelo didn't destroy lara, far from it. got the nod simply 'cause he is canelo, same reason he got a 114-114 vs floyd for example and we all know he lost every second of that fight.

Yer I loved the bit we're he wrote Canelo gets unfavoured when it goes to score cards.
The hilarious thing about that is I actually thinks he truly believes it.
I mean cmon Canelo getting unfavourable scorecards in Vegas.

I'm as convinced as anyone it's a cherry pick, but one I actually think stands a decent chance of backfiring. To put it in perspective, Kovalev could probably hang up the gloves tomorrow, eat a pile of Doritos every day until his 40th birthday, then time travel back and still beat the **** out of present day Rocky Fielding. It's just a much different deal. He's aptly demonstrated he's still very much a live wire, diminished but far from shot, and the idea that Canelo will be able to just hop right in and Paul Bunyan the midsection with impunity seems kind of silly when you take that jab and 1-2 into account, weight drain or not. I see Kov's responses early on largely determining how this one plays out...if Canelo sees he can get in close with little consequence the tree chopping will probably commence early on, culminating in mid to late stoppage. But if Kov is on point with the jab and can sting him enough, Canelo's gameplan could gradually go out the window and things could get real interesting. Another distinct possibility (especially if weight drain is a factor) is Kov having early success keeping Canelo at bay with the jab but then gassing badly somewhere after the midpoint and opening himself up to body attrition, same result different path. Maybe Kov can avoid that outcome by focusing on stamina to an unprecedented degree. Maybe the camp + weight drain pushes Kov over a brink and he goes geriatric overnight. A lot of maybes with this one. Bottom line I don't see it as the walk in the park for Canelo some do, win or lose. This fight's legitimacy goes up considerably with no catchweight/stipulations, but even factoring that likely possibility it is still growing on me by the day.
